Are we allowed to take Muir writing 50 in our sophomore year? I read that we can't enroll in it if we have over 90 units. So is that a yes? Any other restrictions for Muir writing? Thank you.

90 Units makes you a junior, just for a point of reference.

If it says you can enroll in Muir writing any time before 90 units, then that is precisely what it means. In your "sophomore" year you can take it, but it is not necessarily your 2nd year. Remember that. Some people forget that it is by credits and not physical year.

I'm not in Muir, so I couldn't tell you about other restrictions. Catalog says "Prerequisite: satisfaction of MCWP 40 requirement or completion of TAG or IGETC agreement."

it's not that you can't enroll in it. after 90 units, you lose priority and must go see the dept and petition to make them let you take it. big hassle imo, just take it asap to finish up the requirements unless you have some pressing need to push it back. besides, it's always fun to complain to your roommate about the stupid papers/assignments you have to do because he/she can relate and everyone goes through the pain together

^ I agree. The only thing more fun than complaining about writing a stupid research paper is complaining about it with other people. And I recommend taking it ASAP... Its reeeeaalllly nice to get it over with.

^^ yeah seriously. i can't believe we had to write 10 page papers about how the author uses evidence to prove his/her claim for muir40. um, by using evidence? awesome! i just answered the essay question in a sentence.

hm.. sorry to hijack your thread, but does this also apply to Warren Writing (WCWP 10A and 10B). I have sophmore standing right now and pretty sure I'd be in the junior category (by unit) next year.

Thanks! I wasn't sure because of the big deal people make to get into Muir Writing the first quarter of their freshman year

Oneday: you should check the Warren writing website, I'll try to find it for you

Yes, it does apply to Warren Writing:

Registration Information
[return to Policies and Procedures]

First-year and second-year students can WebReg for Warren Writing 10A and 10B classes during their WebReg appointments.

Juniors and seniors must come to the Warren College Writing Program office for departmental approval in order to register.

Please note that juniors and seniors CANNOT ENROLL IN ANY WARREN WRITING COURSE WITHOUT DEPARTMENTAL APPROVAL.

i didn't even take Muir 40 (incoming sophomore). The only time I got in the class was fall quarter of freshman year.

so you dropped it?

^I just dropped muir 40 because I had four classes and wanted three.

I have another question: UCSD states that MCWP 40/50 does not satisfy the English/Writing requirement for medical schools; is it because they need another quarter to make it one full year? does LTEN 28 (literature course) satisfy it?

does anyone know this? does MCWP not satisfy the requirement because you need another course or does it not satisfy it period and one needs to take another english sequence

your counselor prob knows

my adviser is really vague when it comes to answering my questions...it took me 3 questions just to get one definite answer and the first answer i got was misleading

they will let you...but they wont be too happy... after you have junior status you have to go to the muir writing office itself and tell them that you are signing up for the class so that they can clear you so that you can sign up for the class...but i would highly recommend just getting it over with....preferably within the first year...gah its such a pain in the butt and total waste of printer ink gah
good luck

Is MCWP 40 a very hard class? and hows the teacher?

thanks 131313k!

That policy sounds like a hassle for students who come in with 90+ units. What are they supposed to do?

Petition a form or something. Seems unfair for the students who get really bad reg times.

responding to adam

mcwp is a bit weird
its not necessarily hard but it is by no means easy
they sorta use a sandwich grading scale
so there are going to be alot of Bs and few Cs and As

therefore, getting a D will be rare... and getting a perfect A is almost nonexistent (although there will be A-s here and there)
