I was provisionally admitted for fall 2011 as a transfer student for Political Science, basically I must complete and pass one of the 'golden four' courses with a C or better (Math) which I'm currently taking. As far as I'm concerned, I'm doing rather well in the class and I am confident I can squeeze out at least a B, so I'm not really that concerned in that area. The admission letter however does not state that I must pass this specific class, which leads to the source of my paranoia.

My problem has to do with an additional class I'm taking. This specific course (Macroeconomics) I took once before and received a D. This second time around I'm also struggling with it and I fear I might end up with another D and its really bugging me, I'm afraid Long Beach will withdraw my admission because of it. I should mention however that this class is not part of the 'required' transfer courses for my major (PoliSci) and the only reason I decided to take this class again was to make up that D I received the first time and attempt to boost up my GPA a bit. Also, I have around 62 transferable units already which is above the 60 required, so I don't even need this class for the units.

My question: Do you guys think that if I end up receiving a second D on this course by the end of the semester LB will withdraw my admission? Is Political Science an impacted major @ LB? (More of a reason to worry)

Additional information: I'm taking a third course in which I'm confident I can get an A by the end of the semester. My GPA as of Winter 2011 ~ 3.2

I am in a sourt of similar situation. Does your acceptance letter tell you that you are a certified admit. Best way to feel confident is call the admissions office and talk to your assigned transcript evaluator.

This is my situation, I am a certified admit, which means I have of 60 units min. competed and all golden four done. I have 67 units completed to be precise and just to let you know they take an extra 10 units transferable therefore that grade of a D will transfer (you may be able to retake that class at LB).

From my experience talking to them, if its not a part of your major then you in theory should be fine.

and also forgot maintain their minimal GPA

I also may receive a D in my bio class and they told me it should be okay. Either way though I think if its not a part of your major just pull through for that C even if you can retake it at LB, better safe then sorry.

RisingSun: Thank you for the speedy reply! I am not a certified admit, I’m a provisional admit so I’m even more worried. I was unaware that that was solely based on the number of transferable units one has at the time of application. If that is the case, then I do not have the 60 required units as I previously thought and instead have somewhere around 58-59, I have to go back and check to make sure.

How does one get in contact with their assigned transcript evaluator? Do I simply call the admission office and ask to speak to one? How does that work? Thank you for the tip.

@monkey, that is definitely a troublesome situation. When you call their admissions office, not their automated machine, ask for your transcript evaluator because of your concerns. Admissions can give you answers but it is better to actually get to talk to the person that has your transcripts viewable. When they transfer you to your evaluator, you will most likely get an answering machine message. Leave a message and they usually are good at getting back to you within 24 hours.

From what I understand you’re trying to say, your provisional acceptance was to pass one of four courses. You will pass one of these four, but in an unrelated class you might get a D? That right? If your GPA remains high and you pass the one of the four classes, I don’t think they’ll revoke your acceptance.

Check to make sure if your major is impacted, and if so check if the class you might fail is part of your major’s requirements.

If your major is impacted and requires that class and you fail it, they will revoke your acceptance, as far as I understand. Sorry.

certified admits are only for incoming freshman no?
unless you’re talking about GE certified admits???

lol which doenst even matter in this situation because you dont need IGETC / GE cert. done to get into csu’s. it just means you’ll have to take more classes (usually more expensive / annoying) to do at the school. i’ll be withdrawing from my calc II course later this week.

also to asnwer your question i was in the same situation heres what the person said:

Dear ****************

Thank you for your inquiry.

You were admitted provisionally for Fall 2011, which means that you were admitted
provided you complete A2 Speech with a grade of C or better, no later than Spring 2011.
You met all other requirements, including requirements for the Business major.

You are required to submit an official transcript from ******** College showing grades through Spring 2011.
This will confirm that you met the A2 Speech requirement with a grade of C or better.
The deadline for submitting this transcript is July 15, 2011.

Calculus II is not required for admission. However, it would be better to withdraw than to receive
a substandard grade of D or F, as this will lower your gpa.

If you need further clarification, please contact me.

bowlhead, what is the email you contacted for your issue?

I’m in the same boat as the two of you right now. I’m failing AP Statistics right now but in all my other classes I’m maintaining all A’s (2 other AP classes). So I’m pretty sure my grade in stats won’t affect my GPA that much?

mine was transfer admits officer so im inclined not to give it out… try finding an admissions officer for freshman. they;ll forward the email if necessary.

@Raising, thanks again for the tip! I will be giving them a call tomorrow when their office is open to address my concerns.

@Jrairship, Yes, thats about the gist of it. According to me, I only ‘need’ this one specific math class in order to transfer. However, I’m afraid a low grade in an additional class will bring my GPA down and cause LB to revoke my admission.

I checked and Political Science is no longer an impacted major, it was last year apparently.
