Hey,

I'm a junior this year. I took AP Lang last year and got a 5 on the test. I'm currently in AP Lit.

Next year, my counselor has told me to take "AP Senior English", a joke of a class at our school that juniors who didn't take AP Lang will go into as seniors and take the AP Lang test at the end of the year.

Basically I'll go from being a junior in an all-senior class to a senior in a class of other senior slackers.

I was considering taking an online English class through our local community college. I still need a 4th credit of English in order to graduate. However, this online college course is not weighted at my school. So basically my class rank would be hurt by taking this option while taking an English class at school that would be way to easy and a complete waste of time would still give me AP credit.

Has anyone been in a similar position? What do you suggest I do? I want to apply to competitive colleges and don't want it to seem like I slacked off senior year. But I'm also worried about rank. And my counselor told me that a college course would be too much for me to handle with college apps and stuff. She wants me to take the easy option.

Please help. Thanks in advance for your input and ideas!

If the "AP" class is going to be easy for you, why don't you take both?

While the "AP Senior English" class may be an easy class at your school, it still has the AP tag and most colleges won't know its a slack off class. Go with that class. You'll thank yourself when you're in the midst of your busy senior year. Seriously.

"And my counselor told me that a college course would be too much for me to handle with college apps and stuff. She wants me to take the easy option."
She's right!!! Listen to her. The whole process of applying to colleges- writing, and rewriting essays, filling in all the tedious basic stuff on applications, asking for recommmendation letters from teachers, and then following through to make sure they are sent in time, possibly visiting colleges, doing interviews, stuffing envelopes with all the application material, etc. etc, is like a part time job all by itself! If your Counselor will be able to say that you have taken the most rigorous courses offered at your HS, then follow her advice.

It's not a "slacker" class. A true slacker wouldn't bother taking any AP classes, they'd do the least they'd have to do to get by. You guys are harsh.

"You guys are harsh."??????
Elizlan- reread the OP's post. HE is the one who called the AP senior english class a "slacker" class, not any of the people who responded.

I would advise you to rally to your school administrators to allow the AP class online to be given a weighed grade. i was in the same dilemma as you, at the beginning of the school year. My school moved all AP classes online through Northwest University, and i was highly applaud when they informed that my A would not be worth 5 points. I went to my administrators and board and got that changed in a blink of an eye- well not that quick but you should get my drift.
