TAMU is my daughter’s stretch school (top 25%, 30 ACT, some AP/DC/Advance Courses but didn’t go crazy with them, large/competitive suburban district). What are some backup schools (OOS is fine) that match her wants?
-Low % Greek Life or at least a decent social life without going Greek.
-Large school spirit and football games
-Friendly, involved students
-Alumni support
-Fairly even male/female ratio
-Business Major
-Things to do besides bars/parties
We’ve heard U of Arkansas is very Greek heavy (and she isn’t outdoorsy so she wouldn’t want to go hiking every weekend). We haven’t visited Texas Tech. SMU, Baylor, and TCU seem too Greek heavy.
If money or distance wasn’t an issue, what else would you recommend?
I definitely recommend Texas Tech!! My Class of 2021 son applied to TAMU as a business major, his class rank was 15%, he he had great EC’s, went test optional brice’s Covid canceled 8 test dates that year. He got the PSA decision in March of that application year. He was upset for a hot second but then we went and visited Tech where he was already accepted as a Finance major and it clicked. He’s now in his second year at Tech and is absolutely thriving! Rawls is a great business school!
@HartofTex its super late to be applying anywhere now…please tell me she’s applied to schools?
Agree about Tech-great school spirit, excellent business school. But very late to be applying.
@HartofTex whew! I would definitely suggest taking SAT and ACT again, trying to up the score, even a couple points on ACT would help greatly, especially if wanting to get into business school.
Her current scores won’t get her into Mays.
Baylor Hankamer Business School is great! I wouldn’t say it’s as heavy as Greek, compared to SMU, TCU, Arkansas, Alabama and others.
All SEC and Big12 schools have fraternities & sororities, but they’re actually a small %, compared to the whole student body.
What about OU? OKState? UH? As well as Tech.
Best thing to do is make in person campus visits.
If she’s interested in Business one thing to consider is direct admission vs competitive admission. A lot of the larger schools have additional GPA requirements after sophomore year. Direct admission takes pressure off.
I can personally recommend South Carolina. Good business school, especially if she’s interested in International Business. Columbia isn’t a metropolis but there’s things to do. Checks your boxes.
S21 is at FSU and loves it. NC State in Raleigh. U Miami if cost isn’t a consideration. Pitt checks the boxes if she would consider colder weather. Their business school is well regarded. Small classes and direct admission.
