Alternate Major -- UC Oriented

I have a better chance of getting into my alternate major (Film Studies) than my primary (Computer Science) because of a missing prereq. Solid 3.40 GPA going into Spring and am trying to get into Irvine.

If I don’t get accepted into my primary major but get into my alternate, is it feasible to attend with my alternate for a quarter than change to my intended major? Wouldn’t they expect some people to do this?

I would just apply the following winter, spring etc, but my CC only gives the course I need during spring (don’t feel like moping around for a whole year because of 1 course).

My entire personal statement is geared towards my primary major, will that effect my alternate acceptance? Isn’t the personal statement only supposed to help you and not hurt you if you are on the border of acceptance, anyways?

When is the deadline for updating your application. My CC doesn’t post grades until like Jan. 7th (ugh!).

Thanks,
Matt

If you get admitted you can even go and petition to be in a different major than the one you were admitted with--so yes.

It can't help you get into film studies if you didn't talk about it.

Don't know--there are certain exceptions. I assume the typical deadline is mid January.

Why can't you take the computer science prerequisite this spring? You can put that the class is in progress and the adcoms will see you are doing it.

And also, you have to check UC Irvine's approach towards alternate majors.

OK first of all, you need to be in the TAP program and certified for them to consider you for your 2ndary major. If you aren't, they're going to consider your first and your first only.

Second of all, if you are in the TAP program, and you get into your secondary major, switching into your primary will require the completed prereqs and petition to the dean. It's possible, but very difficult if your major is over impacted.

Kevintech--he is talking about Irvine, not UCLA.

Thanks Gabe.

Can't take the last remaining prereq because it requires another prereq that I am doing in the spring. I'm in the middle of petitioning for a prereq challenge. So just in case the petition doesn't work and I don't get accepted into my primary for UCI, I know my alternate won't fall through on me.

Good luck. 3.4 is a good GPA for Irvine from what I understand.
