Alumini scholarship finalist

i just got an email saying that ive advanced from semifinalist to finalist round, and im elgible for an interview. does this mean i got the scholarship? who else got this email?

no it means, you get an interview. Only after you pass the interview round do you get a scholarship.

I recommend that you treat this interview seriously and professionally, because I did not think it would be a big deal but I ended up not getting the scholarship after making it to the final round myself. They're going to ask you questions about leadership, what makes a good leader, and what you're going to be doing once you're at Cal to establish the fact that you're a leader....anyway, think about those questions and you should be fine! :)

Do they have your information on file and will they ask specific questions about your application. Also i got an email for my interview and the slots are a half an hour. Do they pick one person from each district, because it looked there were four time slots to pick from, which i'm assuming means four people including me are competeting in my disctrict.

Yes, they will have your application. I remember my intervieweres consulting my essay as they talked to me, which was really off-putting for me because I kept being asked questions that were very similar to the essay (Talk about your leadership experiences...) and I felt like I was repeating myself.

It didn't take a half hour for me. My interview was maybe 15 minutes, which freaked me out. Got the scholarship, though.

THe number of ppl they pick per district depends on the size of the district. My district had like 71 people or something. But you are competing against the others in your district.

i'm guessing they give the interviews in person? i am a finalist too, but i'm in texas

My son got this e-mail last night:

No doubt you have worked hard to get this far and you have done well in a very competitive process. Congratulations on your admission to Cal and on reaching the Semifinalist level of the Alumni Leadership Scholarship. We are please to inform you that you have advanced to the Finalist round, where you are now eligible to interview with Alumni Scholarship representatives. If you are selected for an interview, you will be contacted sometime in the next several weeks, so there is no need to contact us. You will receive final word regarding your scholarship decision no later than April 24.

This is a great honor, as only the top 15% of all Leadership Award applicants have made it this far. We wish you the best of luck in your application process.

So, what does all this mean? How do they select from here the interviewees? Haven't some people been interviewed already? The rest of the letter encourages him to attend Cal Day and the overnighter program.
Does anyone know what 15% represents as far as numbers? We are in San Diego, so how does the Alumni Assn determine who to interview?
Any input/info is appreciated.

I just read that alumni scholars, in addition to getting the annual scholarship, also get 20% off anything they buy at the student store. Now that sounds like a good deal. Also it had different divisions to what award you get if you win. Like Lower Divisionl: 1500-2000 Upper Division: 2000-2500. Does this mean like upper and lower division as in what year you are in school. Also does the amount you get depend on your financial need.

Maybe upper and lower division is decided based on how much they like you?

My interview is tomorrow. Do they only ask leadership-specific questions or are there typical college interview questions (describe yourself, why Cal, etc) thrown in there too?

Yes, lower div refers to freshman and sophomore year; upper div refers to junior and senior year

Any one on campus can apply for the 2nd/3rd/4th year awards.

Usually the interviews are set ot be in person, but my D had to do hers by phone due to sports season travel, which changed her district to be the alumni office not her hometown group. I don't know what they do with OOS kids, but phone might be one way.

20% off at the student store, but not books!

What? No books!!! What a rip off. They fail to mention that on the scholarship description.

The OOS alumni scholars I met at the Fall reception were interviewed by phone.

I haven't gotten anything in the e-mail about an interview...should I be worried?? I did advance as a finalist but just no word about any interview date.

yah, i haven't recieved any calls/email for an interview either.

i dont think they pick all the finalists to have interviews...only the top

Got a call yesterday about the interview, only 1/2 of the finalists are interviewed in person. Not everyone will get an interview. It's logistics. I asked if I could do it on the phone and he said in person is better.

"If you are selected for an interview..." So after the finals round, there's another "round" for interviews?

If so, are we contacted by phone or email? thanks

oh hah. just kidding.... i didn't read the second page of thread...
X_x

for my region, the guy emailed us to notify that we were selected for an interview. he then followed up with a call.
