hey arwen1, is that the full ride one? i received that as well. congrats!

Really? Ah! I'm so excited to meet another ADS. Are you definitely planning on intending? We should facebook each other! =D

not sure if i'm going to MSU, but definitely choosing MSU over UMich if i stay in state. the ads weekend was amazing and totally wanted me to go to MSU.

i'll PM my name so you can facebook me. I know 2 other ADS scholars and possibly a 3rd? (I have to confirm if he got the scholarship or just went to the test).

Just wondering- what type of information do they want to know in the interview?

I had an interview today, and it wasn’t what I expected. Interviews for schools had been pretty relaxed and conversational, but this was much more intense.
They were looking at your admissions materials and the essays you wrote during the test and had specific questions about fairly minute details. It seems that the purpose is to weed out those that put something down because they thought it sounded good and those that wrote/included genuine experiences and activities.

It kind of feels like the test all over again: its difficult to feel good about it during, but as long as you do better than other people…

With that said, good luck!

I received a letter telling me I am a Semi-finalist, but I never had an interview. Should I call someone at MSU? Does this mean I can’t become a Finalist?

It’s hard to say. My son received a call yesterday to schedule his phone interview and to let him know that he had advanced as a finalist. (We didn’t even know at that point that he had made it to semi-finalist, since we didn’t receive the “semi-finalist” letter until today).

Perhaps if you call the admissions and explain the situation, they can get you in touch with the right person to schedule an interview.

To clarify, the interview comes only if one is a finalist, not a semi-finalist. A student needs to advance beyond semi-finalist to get interviewed. According to the letter, it looks like approx. 55 students made it to semi-finalist and do not advance, while approx. 65 have made past semi-finalist to finalist (will get either Full ride plus, full tuition, or $2500/year for 4 years).

Anyone know whether final decisions are usually by email or snail mail?

I think they have typically called with final decisions. At least if you made ADS Scholar.

D received the phone call last year, with the news that she was selected for a (full-ride) ADS Scholarship.

I got a phone call yesterday with my decision (alumni distinguished scholar). They said that they would be mailing out decisions that day, so check your mailbox.

Does anyone know if they release the answers to the test after the fact? There are a few that I am still wondering about.

^^^nope they definitely don’t release the test questions/answers to students (or anyone for that matter) probably to preserve the integrity of the test from year to year.

Just wondering who’s heard back so far. I was told that I would be called this week (I did the interview last week), but it’s already Friday. Is this a bad sign?

They probably call only the top 15 of ADS Scholars. The rest receive scholarship information via regular mail. There is still some hope! Good luck.

Received a letter Wednesday alerting S of Distinguished Freshman Scholarship (full tuition and fees). Unfortunately, this does not help in the decision-making process around our house :(

Congratulations to all the ADS Scholars! Hopefully, I’ll meet you all at our first meeting next year, where I can dispense advice about things I really know nothing about. :D

Sup proletariat, what do you do at MSU?

What do you mean, what do I do? I mean, I’m a zoology/anthropology double major in Lyman Briggs with a minor in math. I did a research project in math and am working on a PA project in theoretical ecology. I’m also involved with quiz bowl, Model UN (MSUMUN, the high school conference), and a literary/art magazine called Arthur, and I do all kinds of other stuff. I’ve never run out of things to do. There is no excuse for being bored here.
