alumni Interview

What's the significance of alumni interview invitation? D's friends (same HS) got their invitations today but D didn't get one. Not sure what this means. I sure hope this doesn't mean she is off the table already. Any thoughts?

There may be more than one person doing the interviews and your d’s interviewer just hasn’t sent out the invites yet. Last year for RD, kids from my d’s school had interviews over the course of about five weeks, so don’t read anything into it.

@pacnwmomof2 - Thank you. That makes sense. Do you know how they identify which students to interview so quickly? D and her friends submitted apps only about a week ago.

You’re over-thinking this. Alumni interviewers are volunteers. If Stanford is like most other schools with an interview program, the admissions office rather quickly contacts the local alumni interview coordinators and lets them know who applied from the region, and those names are then divvied up for the volunteers (assuming there are enough volunteers to cover everyone). From there, it’s up to the individuals to reach out to students and – bear in mind – Stanford alums tend to be successful, busy people. It may take a few days for someone to reach out to your child, but it will probably happen.

That’s exactly right! There were a couple of alums in our area that interviewed applicants. All were very casual and friendly. They are not trying to weed anybody out or trip you up. My d felt that her interviewer just wanted to share her love for Stanford and answer any questions. She also told my d that what she (the alum) relayed to Stanford didn’t seem to make a bit of difference in the results. Just try to relax and enjoy talking to someone knowledgable about Stanford!

Thank you both. I will let DD know. Appreciate your insight.

Yeah like they said don’t worry about it. They did a case study and in only around 10% of cases are the interviews actually a significant contributing factor in their decision, and my guess would be mostly when the student bombed it/didn’t have a personality that matched their application
