Alumni Scholarship

Dear Alumni Scholarship Applicants,
You have two reasons to be congratulated today. First, on your admission to UC Berkeley, the #1 ranked public University in the country. Secondly, you have also now passed on the semifinalist round for the Alumni Scholarship Leadership Award, one of the most prestigious awards on the UC Berkeley campus and the largest nonacademic merit-based scholarship programs in the country.

At this point, we are still determining which Leadership Award semifinalists will be invited to interview with local UC Berkeley alumni in their area. You will receive an email update by Thursday of next week notifying you if you have advanced to the Finalist round, in which you are eligible for an interview. Please check your email, as you will receive an update by Thursday.

If you also applied for the Achievement Award Program, stay tuned as you will receive an update about your application next week. For questions about the Achievement Award Program, email achieve@alumni.berkeley.edu

Also, please note that as a Leadership Award semifinalist, you are now eligible to participate in the Overnight Stay Program on the UC Berkeley campus. Registration will open one week from today, Saturday April 8 at 12 noon. You will receive an email with more instructions about how to register next week. Please see the information below for more details.

Congratulations and best of luck!

The email came an hour ago. How did others fare?

Do you get an e-mail if you don't reach semifinalist status?

I got the same e-mail about an hour ago. The last e-mail (the Howdy one) said everyone should expect an email today.

Cool I got the e-mail.

i got it too...even though i'm a spring admit. go figure.

if we reach finalist status, are we guaranteed some scholarship $? or do we still have to reach some "higher" level?

I hope I get a spot on the overnight stay program.

so did anyone who applied not get the email?

D got this same e-mail. Sounds like a standard maybe-maybe until next week.

After the semifinalist, you become a finalist and that's that. You get the money. There's no "higher" level (unlike UCLA)

yay! i got one too. i didn't expect it because i didn't receive any email prior to this and i submitted the application an hour after the deadline.

what is the signficance of the interview? does it determine whether you get the award, or is it only a formality?

No, the interviews matter. The scholarship is pretty competititve. It's done by districts. I remember last year the interviewer in my district told me the number of semifinalists he was interviewing and the number of scholarships he would be rewarding, the ratio was pretty small and it worried me.

I was interviewed by four people at the home of the main interviewer. I'm not sure how it goes for every district though.

I thought I did terribly in my interview because I said nothing terribly interesting (just rehashed my essay)...but I still got it, so who knows

this scholarship is only like $2000/yr right? It's....really not that much.

I was interviewed at a high school by two alumni. There was also a room across the hall that had two alumni doing interviews as well. I believe only two people got it from my district (there was a banquet at the beginning of the semester that listed all the recipient's w/their high school), and there was a large number of people interviewing.

i'm a semifinalist. Do I get money for this?

You only get money as a finalist.

It's 1500/yr for your first two years, then 2000/yr after that. I think though if you receive financial aid, it's different. Also it's different if you're OOS.

Money's money.

Is this leadership award based on grades and scores, or is it just based on your leadership roles and ECs. I hope that they assume everyone has good academics since they got into Berkeley. I cant compete with people who have 4.6 gpas and 2400 SATs.

Sweetdreams87: Does it drop your financial aid?

Oh I'm sorry. It used to augment financial aid in some way but that seems to have changed. According to its website, if you have "high need" you get another $3000. I have no idea how they determine "high need"

It's purely based on leadership. On their website they said it's a nonacademic merit scholarship.
