On legal forms we’ve always filled out “some college” because my Dad went to a school (Damoh Degree College, which for some reason I can’t even find on google) and he dropped out. My mom went to a school and also dropped out. My Dad still got a degree of some sorts but when he was getting his contractor’s license they didn’t accept it as a degree. Since then we’ve always filled out “some college” on all legal forms. Would two “some college” parents from a foreign country (India) make me a first generation student?
No. If your parents attended any school beyond the requirement, then you are not first generation. It doesn’t matter that they dropped out.
Generally, this applies to kids, whose parents couldn’t access higher education and who don’t know anything about the college system process.
BTW, it doesn’t give much of an advantage on your apps. There are lots of kids, from the states, who are low income and first generation.
There is no “first generation” check off box. You list your parents’ levels of education and it’s up to the colleges to use that information as they see fit.
Thanks a lot for the info, I don’t know why I was so stressed out about whether or not I was first generation but its good to know that I’m not.
Some schools will count you as first gen. because neither parent has a college degree.
