So basically I changed majors mid-way through CC. From engineering to physics. Not drastic, but I made the mistake of taking engineering/programming and IGETC classes before my math/physics classes because of pre-requisites. To make things worse, I even took the entire chem series because I mistakenly thought it was required, when it's actually only suggested. This forced me to take all 6 math courses, and all 4 physics courses this year.

Things is, I put off the second required english class until now because of my time constraints and all the reading it requires (been taking 20 units past few quarters). I didn't know it was REQUIRED to finish it before applying. I even asked a counselor.

And now I'm hearing people got rejected with high GPAs because of this. Well ****.

And now I feel like I might get my first failing grade in physics. So I won't finish the series before transfer. I feel like an idiot now for taking all those unnecessary courses, putting so much effort into them, getting As, and now I'm probably going to get rejected because of it.

Can I just contact the UCs and switch my major to math now that I won't finish the physics series? Most of my applications are still pending. This is such a ****ty feeling.
3. 5-. 6 GPA if it matters any.

Tl;dr Second english requirement IP. Does that mean insta-reject? Also won't finish physics pre-requisites because of stupid scheduling decisions. Can I change my major to math still?

I don’t know where all this ridiculous misinformation regarding the fact that you HAVE to finish the math/english requirements prior to or during Fall is coming from; it simply isn’t true. I’m in nearly the same exact position as you: I’ve changed my major upwards of 7 times and have finally arrived at Physics. Resultingly, my courses are a jumbled-up mess of unrelated GE- and major-prereqs. At any rate, I’ve spoken at length to the admissions departments at Cal and UCLA, and I’ve spent countless hours researching admissions requirements on my own, and I can tell you that I haven’t once seen any validity confirmed to the Fall-completion statements. It is explicitly stated everywhere, and by the admissions offices, that pre-reqs, IGETC, etc, finished by Spring 2012 will be considered during the admissions process.

That all being said, I know that the fact that I recently changed my major to Physics and now only have one, concrete semester (Fall) from which UCs must deduce my preparedness will probably hurt my application. If you were on an engineering track, however, you are most likely going to appear prepared (BTW, Chemistry is also recommended for Physics at Cal and UCLA, so you didn’t waste your time).

You cannot change your major at this point. All you can do is wait. As for your failing grade in physics, you need to reconcile it, because that is a major course. If you can speak to a teacher about your options, do so. If you can drop the class with a W (or if your drop deadline hasn’t passed, do that), then you can repeat the course for a better grade. Point is, there is nothing you can do now but wait.

Tl;dr No; No

It’s NOT required to finish the second semester of English by Fall. It is however preferred at some of the UCs, notably UCSB, especially if you have struggled with (had to repeat it more than once or took a W) or haven’t already taken a UC transferable English course that they can evaluate you by because you fulfilled the first semester English requirement in an alternative way. If you’ve shown significant progress towards completing the English requirement you will be fine for admission at most of the UCs. Obviously though completing it early is beneficial as it guarantees you’re an eligible transfer before admissions makes their decision.

It would be particularly difficult to change your major this late into the process, but it doesn’t hurt to call admissions and try. You should also be able to get a direct answer about the English requirement for that particular UC and what’s preferred and required for admission.

That’s very relieving to hear. After I read the UCSB thread, I thought I was screwed. I actually got an A in honors english 1A, so hopefully SB will consider that.

As far as the physics things, it isn’t looking very good. There’s no way I finish the series before transferring, even if I do retake it for a better grade. I’ll still be missing the last course. I’ll talk to the counselor and see what’s up. I’m just happy I’m not going to be rejected for not taking english.

Thanks for the help.

Another question: If my primary major is physics, but my secondary is math, does that mean I could still be accepted as a math major if I don’t finish all the physics pre-req? Because honestly, I have the worst teacher in physics right now, and i think I’ve lost all interest in the major. I don’t even want to take another physics courses after this one.

If you’re rejected to your first choice major, at most of the UCs you’ll be re-evaluated for admission to your alternate major assuming you’ve made sufficient progress completing the pre-requisites. For UCSB, if you have a competitive GPA and finish all the other requirements I’d imagine you’d have a favorable chance of acceptance despite missing one prerequisite as Physics isn’t impacted.

-edit-
If you’re asking if you can switch your majors and be evaluated as a Math major first and Physics as a back up, that’d be the same as changing your major, so it isn’t likely. However, it should be fairly easy to switch between two non-impacted majors once you transfer.

Taking 2nd English (Critical Thinking ?) right now, got accepted to UCSD and UCSB.
