Hello all! I am open to any comments or suggestions you may have for me. Thanks in advance

So I graduated with my AA on the IGETC (California) track from a community college almost 4 years ago. My GPA was around 3.2 I transferred a year later in fall to a 4-year, but had to drop all of my classes due to an issue in the middle of the semester. When I tried to reapply to schools for the following semester, they were all extremely competitive to get in to or just closed to spring admissions period. In the time I have been trying to reapply to 4-year schools as a junior, I have been taking certificate program related courses at community colleges or fulfilling language requirement I would need to at a 4-year & working. Needless to say I have attended at least 6 schools total (one 4-year and five CCs) and haven't been able to get into a 4-year. I am thinking it is because of my transcripts and my inconsistency with taking random classes.

Is there ANYTHING I can do to get out of this situation and FINALLY get accepted to a school UC or CSU? I really need to finish, I am so close yet so far!

If you have too many CC + 4year units, you will be disqualified from the UCs. So for the moment, let’s table the UC. Besides, with a 3.2, it is hard to get into most of the UCs.

You should be able to get into your “local service area” CSU as a transfer student. Your local CSU is the one that is in the service area CCC that you earned the most units. Figure out which CCC you have the most transferable units–then identify your “local service area” CSU. (See link below.) With a 3.2, you should be almost guaranteed a spot at that CSU. However, for other CSUs, it is a bit more of a toss-up. Less popular CSUs would probably take you (Humbolt, Stanislaus, other out of the way places.) Impacted campuses like SJSU and SFSU are potentially unlikely unless you are a local transfer based on the definition above.

Just know that CSUs are numbers driven schools - they don’t ask for recommendations or essays. They look at your GPA and want to see the Golden 4 completed (do you have them done?). Then it is a ranking system based on GPA (after location is factored in). So they won’t care if it is 6 schools on your transcripts or if you took several different types of courses. Just make sure you have your pre-reqs done for your transfer major!

Hmmm I did my golden four years ago only getting a C in the critical thinking philosophy portion so I’m not understanding why I can’t get in still.
I no longer live near nor have any desire to go to the feeder school for the school I did my transferable courses from. What now?

Private school is looking really good right now =(

Thanks for your reply!

Oh and I have 0 units from the 4 year I attended since I had to drop midsemester of my first and only semester there. I can’t return to that school because they no longer offer my major

You don’t specify which CSUs turned you down, but for any school other than your local feeder school a 3.2 is no longer a guarantee to get into a CSU because each CSU is basically filling their spots with “local CCC transfers” first and then with whatever limited space is left, it is a GPA-based decision… and the non-local 3.9s down to 3.3s are taking those spots before you!

And yes, if you don’t want to attend your CCC-to-CSU feeder school, you might be out of luck. However, there are CSUs that take non-local students with 3.2s - but not the really competitive ones.

A lot of privates will take a 3.2 transfer student, though financial aid is a bit uneven (meaning, it may end up costing quite a bit.)

As for the 0 units from a 4year, you’d have to get the fine print from the UCs to figure out if they still count that as a 4year experience. Meaning, you might not have dropped the classes in time (or have Ws, Is and Fs?). I don’t know their policy.

My suggestion:

Research the CSUs that you would consider attending and find out their non-local CCC transfer GPA cut offs for last year (many publish them online now because of impaction). This should at least then help you make a list of CSUs that would be reasonable to apply to.

Also, consider the things you were not considering. Pick a new major from the 4year. Move back and attending your CCC-to-CSU “local” transfer school. Figure out if you can afford a private college. Etc. There are paths to a 4year college, but you need to figure out what options are open (vs. options that are open but you choose to ignore).

Also, talk to a CCC transfer counselor and go over your transcripts carefully to make sure there aren’t any problems that need to be fixed before your next round of applications.
