Am I First Gen?

Hi, everyone. As far as I've been told, being a first generation student isn't that big of a deal, but I'm just wondering if I'd be classified as one, as my family's college experience is kind of confusing. Here goes (listed by parental side):

Mom: --
Aunt 1: --
Aunt 2: average "tier" private uni
Uncle: --
Grandma: --
Grandpa: --

Dad (is adopted, and has a sister who he doesn't speak with): --
Uncle: --
Grandma: -- (as far as I know)
Grandpa: Dartmouth

Also, data for my dad and his side is all based on his adoptive relatives, and my paternal grandparents (his adopted parents) both died before or right after I was born.

Thanks for the help!

Whoops, that “adopted” should be “adoptive.”

yes, you’d be considered 1st gen.

Cool, thanks! If I happen to apply to Dartmouth when I start applying to colleges, which may be a possibility, would my paternal (adoptive) grandpa count as a legacy?

Yep, you’re 1st gen. Idk about the legacy though

You don’t get to count both. Either you are first gen or legacy.

Yeah, I think it’s one or the other - 1st gen or legacy. If I were you, I’d go with 1st gen.

Check the legacy rules at each school by the ay - for some it only applies to a parent who attended as an undergrad (the narrowest version). For others, it could include siblings or grandparents, and possibly attendance at a grad school.

Thanks everyone. I realized that I can’t say that I’m both, I was just wondering if I would be able to do either. Thanks again. :)
