So I got an e-mail today that after reviewing my final grades, they decided it wasn't on par with what I had before. I didn't do THAT badly but I dropped like 6 points in total GPA (out of 100).

They want a written letter (e-mail) explaining why before they get together and discuss what action to take. They are hoping that I "understand the gravity of the situation." Scary words. I'm scared.

I would like you guys to be brutal and honest - as always. What is most likely to happen? There actually was a reason why my grades dropped but it's kind of a personal thing I don't wanna disclose.

This is an Ivy League University by the way.

It depends on how low or high your grades where before you dropped 6 points, if you were close to what they consider a D or low C 6 points can push you into failing or D. If you were around an A and dropped to low A or B they probably are just concerned.
If your personal reason is good then they shouldn’t be too hard on you.

That doesn’t even seem like a little bit of a deal. I guess that they want to make sure no one fails and dropping grades is a slippery slope for a lot of people, but you already said you had personal reasons so you’ll be fine.

They could rescind your admission. They could also put you on academic probation- which I would hope is more likely. It is unlikely that you’d get off scot free at this point.

Go ahead and explain away, regardless of how personal- but with this caveat- if the reason for lower grades includes illegal or legal drug abuse, or any form of seriously dishonest / illegal behavior, you’ll have a hard time explaining it and being able to attend the Ivy in the fall. If it’s related to social life at school and some falling out with friends / partner, the university in question probably won’t be very sympathetic either. Medical issues and hospitalization is nothing to be ashamed of either if it is the reason for the grade drop. Problems / deaths within your family are legitimate reasons in pretty much any situation (but obviously don’t lie about them if this wasn’t the issue).

I don’t mean to be making any assumptions about the presumed cause of your grade drops, if it seems like it. I understand that you’re under a lot of stress now, and wish you the best of luck in the following days.

EDIT: I assume this is a drop in final gpa by 6% and not just semester grades?

Did you end up getting one bad grade (like a C or D) or did all or most of your grades drop? I think if you have a valid reason (medical/personal it sounds like), it should be ok. Just make sure you don’t try to blame the school or a teacher or your parents. State the problem clearly and how it affected school work and your life and your future plan of action. Good luck!

It was a general drop in all my classes. I didn’t drop 6 points overall, just at the last semester. I dropped about 2-3 points overall. Before I was like 95s all across but now I was like 88 here, 85 there, one 99 one 80. Nothing too drastic. I didn’t like fail anything.

And thanks for your advice guys. I’m pretty stressed right now but I guess I’ll just tell them what happened (it wasn’t drugs lol).
