Am I good enough to major in music?

My vocal audition is in less than a week and I’m having a little pre audition anxiety! I know I’m good, but I’m nervous I’m not good enough. I have been to all state every year but one. The years I made it I had either the highest or one of the highest scores at my school. I am extremely strong in sight reading. I come from an amazing school choral program. What worries me is that I haven’t had real private voice lessons. The ones I have had were with my piano teacher who minored in voice. I hear everyone saying that it’s nearly impossible to get in to a music program without private lessons and that’s starting to worry me. I just want to be prepared if I don’t make it. Is it possible that I can make it in without having had private voice lessons?

Hi katie, nerves are a hard thing to deal with but best learned now. You need to visualize success not failure. At this point practice and visualize doing the best you have ever done and go to your audition with confidence. None of us can tell how good you are or if you will be successful. Do you have other auditions? Although it is a little late, there will be programs that are not audition based that have late application deadlines. You can aways have your safety selected that way. “Making it” is very dependent on what you want to accomplish. Wishing you the best audition - <<>>

PM’ed you

Thank you! I do have other auditions and have applied to one non audition school so I have other options. The main reason I’m a little nervous is because this is my first choice school and first college audition (probably not the best idea in retrospect). Anyway, thank you again for the for the advice! It definitely helped!

Take a deep breath. I think they are looking at potential to develop in addition to just general talent/ability.
