I'm a vocalist auditioning in November for their commercial music major. I haven't been academically accepted into the school yet, but they still sent me my audition date. I haven't been taking vocal lessons very long. I started last fall semester at my community college and I'm still there. So this is my third semester taking vocal lessons. Before lessons, I just sang as a hobby. I got lead solos in choirs and stuff, but I never had lessons. Also, I have been taking ear training for two semesters now. My ear is already pretty decent, but it could definitely be better. I have been taking music theory for three semesters.

I guess what I want to know is, how good do you have to be to get in? I'm not a classical singer so my classical piece probably won't be that great, but hopefully my commercial pieces are really good. Also, they ask you to bring a list of musical activities and a list of songs you've studied with your coach. I don't have a very long list because I didn't start singing until last fall. Do they care about that?

Rep lists commonly called for in vocal auditions. It’s your audition that’s going to be most important, so polish the pieces you’re working on now and get good recommendation letters from your private teacher and from the choir directors you’ve worked with. Good luck!

any idea how many are accepted into Belmont commercial voice program? Just went thru the whole musical theater auditions with my older child last year and my next wants commercial voice-is it as selective? More selective? There seems to be less schools that offer commercial/pop vocal especially when you omitt conservatories ( my daughter wants acedemics ). Help please- Belmont is her first choice-any info is appreciated.

Not sure exactly how many they admit each year, but commercial voice is the most popular major at Belmont and the most competitive music program. It is a strong program and one of the few out there for commercial voice. They do take transfers if your daughter is not accepted there. A family friend just started there in January after completing two years at a local community college, doing a lot of local theater and performing with her brother. Belmont also reviews your musical resume so a good background in performance is as essential as a good audition.

thanks honestmom,
D has a lot of performing experience, although most is in musical theater. She studies voice, but that’s primarily classical. I know how competitive MT was last year ( other D is a freshman at NYU MT ) . All ended well, but there were so many things we would have done diff. had we known ( coach, summer programs etc.) I just want to make sure we don’t anything this time around. There seems to be so little info out there- anything is appreciated,
thank you.

@helpfulmom Congrats!! My S is a senior at Belmont (composition major) so feel free to PM me if you have any questions. We love the school. S absolutely loves Nashville. We live in PA. What other schools has your D applied to?
Thanks honestmom, I will PM you when we are back in town- appreciate any info- we are on the road auditioning for musical theater- Elon, FSU and Michigan. For commercial voice D auditioned for U of Miami and USC- only heard back from Belmont so far.
My son is deciding between Miami and Belmont for Music Business and Vocal Perfomance… I have older son that went to USC (Thornton) , and we know a lot of people in the Pop Music program if you want to pm me I can put you in touch with them. Also would love to hear thoughts on Miami v Belmont.
My D hasn’t heard anything from Miami or USC so no use comparing them to Belmont unless there is an acceptance
I have no thoughts about the programs, I feel like I know so much about the different musical theater schools and so little about commercial voice except for the diff between conservatory or not ( D did not want a conservatory, she’s pretty accademics ). If D is accepted to more schools she will have to research, in the meantime love this thread thank you! Hopefully I will be asking more questions here thank you!
My son is looking at many of the same schools for commercial music – composition/songwriting, production, voice, business – MTSU, Belmont, Frost, USC, Berklee. Are there others you’d recommend? Any advice on visits (going to MTSU, Belmont, GSU Kennesaw this month)? Pls message me if there are other helpful threads you’d recommend. Thanks!
@Cbest44 from my experience, Belmont is usually right around 3-4 weeks sending out acceptances. I would think you should get something pretty soon. They are very responsive at the school. Just email your admissions person. Good luck?
