Am I hurting my academic options?

I'm currently undecided on a specific major I want to study, but I'm fairly certain it will be in the college of liberal arts + sciences. With most schools, I'm able to apply to that specific college and then be undecided with regards to a specific major. However, with UIUC it appears I have to choose general studies: undeclared. Is this going to hurt me if I end up going there? What's the process with regards to declaring a college/major later on like?

I strongly recommend that you apply for a specific major, since you will at least avoid having to transfer into at least that initial pick, if you are admitted outright. If you decide on another major later, then you’ll have to go through the transfer process anyway. You are also automatically considered for DGS (undecided), if you fail to get directly admitted into your program of choice. With the transfer process, there are no guarentees that you’ll be accepted, and it depends on your grades, which must be above a certain gpa, but if others are applying with higher GPAs, yours grades may need to be above the stated minimum to gain entry to the program. So, if you have the least inkling of what you might want to study, I’d apply directly to that program.
