Am I killing myself with this courselaod?

I got a D in LS2, so I'll need to retake it. Fall quarter, I plan to take the following:

Chem 14C (4 units)
Chem 14BL (3)
LS2 (5)
Math 3B (4)

I've mostly taken GE's my first year, and am taking a couple of summer classes.

I actually doubt I'll get into 14BL though. What do you think?

ls 2 is a **, 14c is a …I’m not very good at math, so I thought 3b was the hardest in teh series. BL if you get in, is also very time consuming. and if you have pang, all i can say is…good luck.

Any other opinions?

LS2 was very enjoyable for me, as it was most applicable to body systems and whatnot. 14C/D makes sense for me, especially if you have hardinger’s course material; it’s very comprehensive, and you learn quite a bit. BL is recommended to take during the summer, as you’ll be taking it with Henary; he’s the easiest tester out of the BL teachers, whereas Pang and Russell will be harder. Get old labs from senior friends to reduce the time you have to spend writing pre-labs/post-labs.

Sure, everything can be a *****. That’s why you have to invest time in it. Everyone else has to.

I meant to say, yeah it’s doable, but you’re going to be SUPER busy and will really have to stay on top of everything. I loved the LS2 material, but that didnt’ mean it was easy for me. 14C/D DO make more sense, but they’re also classes that you can’t take lightly. But if you’re willing to bust your butt, then it’s all good. You gotta do what you gotta do.

What do you mean by 14C/D makes sense?

i thought it was much more…understandable than the concepts in 14B.

yea, you’ll probably die with that courseload. especially if you pulled a D in LS2. take it slower, what’s the rush??

Correct me if I’m wrong, but don’t i need to finish all the lower division courses by the end of 2nd year? Also, is it true that you can take the LS series out of order?

yea you dont need to finish all your lower divs before you start upper divs. look on your major’s website and it will tell you which ones must be completed before you begin upper divs. most people do, however, because they wanna finish em before taking the mcat.

you cant really take the LS classes out of order. the only class that can be taken out of order is ls1. think of ls1 as separate from ls 2-4.

All I’ve completed so far in terms of my major (bio, changing to phy sci but core classes are the same)

-Chem 14A
-LS1
-Math 1

Currently taking:
Math 3A
Chem 14B

I mostly took care of my GEs first year. I checked my DPR and it states that I have only completed 43 UC units, and 5 of those are from that D in LS2. I don’t want to take 5 years to finish undergrad.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

so confusing. :/

i haven’t gone to orientation yet for scheduling and stuff :expressionless: (I’m gonna be a BRUIN! woot!) and i have the catalog and I see all the classes and GEs listed under my major but … do you just schedule you’re own classes? :O?

Can someone give me a better understanding of it all…scheduling and classes and stuff, that is…?

I really need some help here, my enrollment day is on the 1st.

the average person cannot handle chem (let alone ochem) and chem lab at the same time. youre stacking it with a pure memorization LS2 class and math…i dont think you will do well.

a lot of people take chem + chem lab simultaneously and even ochem and chem lab, especially those in the 20/30 series. but when you stack it with a math class that has consistent homework and LS2, that’s pushing it. you took LS2 before though so if you think you can better handle it this time around, those 3 (minus math) might be workable. you can probably breeze through the LS2 labs and get out quickly but if you failed the first time, you might want to think twice about your course load

terrible idea to cram all your GEs your first year. absolutely terrible. you’re better off spreading your science/math/upper division courses out and sprinkling some easy GE classes over time instead to balance out your load.

To post #15. Its too late for that. :frowning: I took so many GES because I failed math 1 in fall quarter. So I couldn’t take chem 14b in winter, and they didn’t offer math 3a in spring. That’s the reason for this. I may have to do another summer session.

Also, I generally assumed people took chem 14b as a 4th class, because it’s only 3 units, was a wrong in assuming that?

Considering you have already failed a couple courses I would rethink becoming a PhySci Major. That major is intense and is filled with “gunners”. Unless you have reevaluated your study habits, etc, it would probably be better to stick with an easier major.

ok that’s understandable then

i agree with 126230. switching to physci might not be the best idea, especially if you got a D in ls2 since physci is an amplified + intensified ls2. endless memorization and a constant major magnet for the more hardcore of premeds. unless you’ve realized what you’ve done wrong in ls2, I would seriously consider other scenarios before switching majors. also, according to the major’s website, 2 D’s in the lower division requirements for physci makes you subject to dismissal from the major so i would not rush trying to cram as many courses as possible. take the math course so you don’t fall further behind, and delay taking chem lab

use your summer to space out your courses. try taking ls2 during summer session 2 so if you need to drop it, you can drop it without any transcript notation as long as its dropped before taking the finals (you might need instructor signature beyond a certain date though, but it prob wont be hard to get). dont take anything else except for ls2 and concentrate on ls2. live sleep breathe ls2. theres plenty of open spots left. if you are serious about switching majors, make this work- do nothing else this summer except ls2. if it looks like after the midterm that its not happening, drop ls2 and reconsider things or pick yourself up and try again in fall

By “another summer session” I meant after next year. I won’t be able to do session C unless I got a new housing contract, etc.

I’m motivated now. I realized that I’ve been wasting far too much time getting nothing done. I was smart enough to get here, so if I improve my study habits, I can succeed. I want to stay a science major, but not pre-med, I want to go into physical therapy or be a physician’s assistant. I feel so dumb, if I hadn’t failed math 1, everything would look so much better now. :(

My 2009 plan looks like this now, suggestions are welcome:
Fall 2009
LS2
Math 3B
Chem 14C

Winter 2010
Math 3C
LS 3
Chem 14D

Spring 2010
LS 4
Chem 14BL
Physics 6A

Chem 14CL would have to wait until Junior year, and if possible Physics 6B would be taken at a CC near me. (The two CC"s near me most likely will not have chem lab)

I’m looking for a subletter for session C. You don’t need to rely on UCLA housing for housing, esp during the summer. If you sign up for session C 09, you might be able to get a little headway on your science courses. Because right now, I’m wincing looking at all those sci+math courses with each other. Have you considered taking up a minor, just to break the monotony?
