Am I Missing any Great Schools?

Okay, trimming the list down to smaller schools with film PRODUCTION majors and also psychology. Yes, FSU and UNC are bigger than small, but it also gives my s flexibility if film production turns out not to be his thing.

American U
Chapman U
Emerson C
Florida State U
Ithaca C
Loyola Marymount
UNC Chapel Hill
Pitzer C
Vassar C

His other "wants & needs": urban or suburban, no big frat scene, diversity (if possible).

Am I glaringly missing any smallish (<10,000) schools? Also, does anyone know which student run tv stations might be particularly wonderful? Thanks.

Eckerd College In Florida offers a psychology major and an Interdisciplinary Arts major, which is, "especially suited to those with an interest in video and film production (experimental, narrative or documentary), which are by their very nature interdisciplinary, typically utilizing the full spectrum of the arts: visual arts, theatre, music and creative writing."

What is Interdisciplinary Arts? - Eckerd College

Eckerd is in a suburb of Tampa, doesn't have frats, has a relatively large diverse (international) student population for a school its size, has an on campus radio station, and has an on campus television station.

USC is excellent, if he has the grades to get in. I think it's around 15k, which is smaller than most publics.

And did you look at Miami? (EDIT: Just kidding, you live there.)

I'd second USC for film-related stuff

Humboldt State University has a renowned Independent Film program in the Theatre, Film, and Dance department. They also have a great Psych program. Campus population runs around 8000.

It's rural, but if you have the funds, San Francisco is only an hour away by plane. It is working on improving it's diversity, but people of any color or religion will find a very tolerant campus.

UM is toooo much of a goodtimes school, I also guess that the whole familiarity thing doesn't help. I'll check into Eckerd. The USC thing sounds a bit too preprofessional, but maybe it's not. I also have no idea what it takes to get into the cinema/tv program. Maybe I think there are little Cecil B. DeMilles running around. My s isn't that driven, so my impression is that he'd be at a disadvantage going in. Thanks for the input, so far great ideas.

Although he hasn't taken any SATs yet, his PSAT was 65/65/60 and his unweighted gpa is 3.559 (weighted 4.792) so I think he's okay grade-wise. He's certainly slim on ec's though, so he's not as strong as his academics might indicate.

He and I are trying to get him a balance of intellectual environment plus hands-on projects, so that's the tricky part of this whole thing. He's done film and tv production in school, and enjoys it. He is also very intrigued by anything mental, and wants to pursue studying psychology. So I thought that if we either helped him find a school where he could double major or major and minor, that that might be ideal. In the absence of a film production program, however, he'd still like to be involved with student tv, so I made another list of schools with psych majors and student run tv stations:

Clark U
C of William & Mary
Emory University
UF (although he really, really doesn't like the size)
C of New Jersey
Trinity U
Tufts U

Hopefully I have safeties/matches/reaches in both lists, and am not missing any great schools. Sometimes too much research renders one brainmushed.

University of San Diego has good psychology and matches your son's grades and SAT scores. Don't know about film or TV station.

How about Occidental?

Funny you should mention Oxy. His sister is frosh there, and I know she'd just have a hissyfit if little brother tagged along, although I do think it would be a good fit in many, many ways.

Ah well...

I have a friend who goes to Emory and another to Chapman, both for film production, and both love their colleges.
