I'm currently a sophomore at a very competitive highschool
in state
My weighted gpa is a 4.7, unweighted is about a 3.8 / 4
I am just barely in the top 10%

I took 1 ap this year: Psych

Taking four ap courses next year (which is the maximum)
calc ab / bc
ap physics
ap ush
ap english lang/comp.

You said it yourself: “nothing outstanding.” This really isn’t enough information to determine whether you could get into UF. Your grades are definitely good enough, although I having a hard time believing that you have a 4.7 weighted GPA when you only took one AP class this year. Your school probably weights classes differently, but UF adds .5 to honors classes and 1.0 to AP classes, and only factors in academic classes. Try calculating your weighted GPA the way UF does and you’ll have a better idea of where you stand. I think the average weighted for admits last year was around a 4.1 or 4.2.

You are on the right track with taking as many AP courses as you can. Just make sure to keep your grades up. You should also pick one club (or activity outside of school) that you really like and devote yourself to it. Try to get into a leadership position if possible. Do some volunteer work. Anything to make yourself stand out among the hundreds of applicants with the exact same GPA as you.

Well you are sort of on track, its too early to tell as we don’t really know much about you. But definitely recalculate your UF GPA using the method gatorgirl told you. If possible take academic classes as electives (not all just maybe one or two electives). For example I took AP Bio as my science and Physics honors as my electives during my junior year. That way your UF GPA can go up (it will also help with bright futures). Also it looks like too many AP’s in my opinion but if you are smart enough and committed enough then go ahead. Study hard for the ACT and SAT as that might just give you the edge and finally try to secure your top 10% status.

Join more clubs, get some volunteer experience, rock those SATS.

APs are NOT everything. I had 4 total (2 sr year, 2 jr year) and got in. A girl I know had 8 APs total and did not get in. Don’t forgo EC’s and work/volunteering to take APs.

I really really really would not recommend taking all AP classes junior year. I have never heard of anyone doing that, and it sounds like it would be suicide. Strength of schedule does matter a lot to UF, but you have to make sure that you can also maintain your GPA, which I think would be near impossible with that many APs. The people I know who got in took about 4-6 APs throughout high school, although many of them also took 4 or 5 dual enrollment classes.

I don’t know how many APs your school offers (obviously more than mine did) but you want to make sure that your schedule is equally strong for your senior year, so UF doesn’t think you’re slacking off senior year. So definitely don’t take all the AP classes you can in your junior year, and then no APs the next year.

Take as many AP classes as you think you can handle, not the amount you think UF wants to see. If you keep your GPA about the same and do well on the SAT/ACT, I think you’ll have a really good shot at getting in.

you’re in very good shape. I say you have a 90% chance, only because UF has rejected valedictorians in the past, so you never know. just make sure you commit yourself to leadership positions in a few clubs/organizations.

I only took one AP class and one Dual enrollment class and that’s less than just about anyone else I’ve spoken to that got in. I also had a 28 ACT, top 7%, many clubs, volunteering, leadership positions, and a strong essay. I got into UF fall 2008. I don’t know if this will help you determine what UF is looking for but AP classes are definitely not everything.

We were told that “dual enrollment” was NOT something that UF was looking for. They much prefer AP or IB classes for the consistency of material.
My D got in for Fall '09 and took 8 AP classes and no dual enrollment.

does dual enrollment classes over the summer that do not affect the school year schedule look good for UF? Such as taking college courses at community colleges etc during the summer that also help your gpa. Do they take that into consideration because i was told it factors into your college gpa.

dual enrollment classes do not (thank God) factor into your UF gpa. That is, once you are admitted anyway. Obviously they factor into your HS gpa and they see it but it won’t affect you once you’re in.

Can you not take a foreign language at school? Or fit it into your schedule? What about FLVS?

As for everything else, the answer is simple: Get good grades, keep up your participation in clubs and volunteer work, and do well on the ACT/SAT.

I don’t know how it could hurt you to take dual enrollment foreign language during summer, unless you got poor grades. It might be difficult fitting 2 years of language into summer though, unless you take an accelerated summer program. Better decide soon, registrations begin for summer term soon.

I took dual enrollment Spanish my sophomore year right at my high school. I received 8 semester hours of college credit and eventually transferred credits to USF where I am now. The dual enrollment Spanish took care of my college foreign language requirement too. It was nice getting the course free of charge too–didn’t have to pay for tuition nor books!
