Chances at UF - Graduating '11

Hello, I would like to know my chances at UF.

Unweighted GPA: 3.85 (Only got 2 B's in high school and those were in Alg1/Alg2 cause I took these in middle school and I was a slacker, FML.

School weighted GPA: 4.79
UF GPA: Above a 4.5
Class Rank: Sophomore year i was 35, but I had like a few B's. Ended up passing sophomore year with a 4.0 so I should be in like the 20s. This year there are 800 juniors I think. I'm pretty sure I'm top 5%.

SATs: Did bad on the first one. I'm a procrastinator and don't try hard until the absolute last minute, in other words I won't do my best until my 3rd SAT. I'm sure I'll get a 1900-2100.

ACTs: Taking this Saturday, aiming for a 32+?

AP Exams: 3 on APWH. I plan to pass AP Calc AB, AP Lang, and probably APUS this year.

9th Grade schedule: All honors, 1 AP ( only 1 AP was available)

10th grade: Same as above.

11th grade: French III, AP Calc AB, PC Support II, Chemistry Honors, AP Lang, APUS.

12th grade: Gonna take AP Calc BC, French 4, AP Lit, PC III, and some other AP classes or dual enrollment classes to get my General Ed classes out of the way.

My Extra Curriculars suck ass:

9th and 10th grade I didn't do crap.

This year I'm in 4 different clubs. Got elected for president of the Math club. Next year I'll join some more and join NHS. Possibly president of the French Club next year also.

I'm planning to have like 150 hours of community service by the end of the school year.

This summer I'm looking into taking a pre-med/pre-college summer program for a few weeks at UCLA or some crap. I'm also gonna start volunteering at the Florida Hospital some time soon since I want to possibly major in medicine.

That's pretty much it, I guess... I've gotten perfect attendance awards, 89 percentile on the junior PSATs -__- (cause I didn't try), got 3rd out of my school in some math competition last month, and some other minor stuff. Nothing that big.

Thanks, any feed back is appreciated!

You’re in… You can get in with those stats with a 26 on the ACT or 1700 on the SAT. UF likes strong GPAs more than test scores.

You’ll get in, no question. No one cares about extra curriculars. Have a competitive schedule for your senior year, write good essays and apply early. I would apply to an Ivy if I were you.

You should be fine, especially if you’re in-state; with your GPA you’ll probably be eligible for the Honors College assuming your SAT/ACT scores qualify. Don’t stress about ECs, and don’t feel obligated to join a bunch of extra clubs your senior year. A handful of ECs you actually like is far better than joining 10 clubs and only skimming their surface.

I had similar stats to you and was accepted for Fall, Class of '14.
ACT: 30
GPA: 4.4/5.0 // 3.85/4.0
5 APs, 1 dual enrollment, a 5 on AP Lang, 4.0 college GPA
average ECs (excepting a dance state award and 100 hrs of community service/organized grassroots project as well)
I wish I had applied for some of the lower Southern ivies (Vanderbilt, Emory, etc.) so there’s really only the application fee to lose! Can’t beat UF’s price though  Best of luck

Thanks guys, your input really helps. What other schools should I consider applying to? Is UF a good school to become a Dentist or software engineer?

And should I take a lot of AP classes senior year (like 4 or 5) but I know I won’t be able to pass all the exams. Maybe like 2 I will. or should I take dual enrollment my senior year?

Dual Enrollment, IMO. Much easier classes that will pad your GPA and still give you the same college credit as if you passed all of your AP’s.

And UF is an excellent school for someone interested in becoming a dentist. My dentist own her own (very lucrative) practice and is a UF grad, I believe she went there for both undergraduate and dental school. Couldn’t tell you about software engineering.

Okay thanks! And what should my dual enrollment classes be? Like Psychology and Philosophy or other non-core classes or shall I take Chemistry, Bio, Physics, etc? Hmm… so these raise the GPA that UF is going to calculate on my application? But what happens if I turn in my application in the summer time, before I even start these classes?

Yea, my dentist (well he used to be one, now he’s an orthodontist) went to UF for either his first 4 years or 8 years and then did his orthodontic studies at UPenn :D. I think I should ask him how hard it was and what he did… I’m just scared that there’s a chance I might not get accepted into a dental school or like perhaps there’s a possibility that it might be too hard to study, too hard to be a dentist, etc. I don’t know :(

You’re in at UF. You would also likely be accepted at the upper-end schools like Carnegie-Mellon/Rice/Johns Hopkins/Vandy/etc. (Ivies were mentioned - you’ll need to get your SATs up and make sure you graduate in the top 5% of your class to make the Ivies.)

UF is a good school for software engineering. It’s not as good as CMU, Georgia Tech, or Clemson. It’s better than USF and FSU though.

“Okay thanks! And what should my dual enrollment classes be? Like Psychology and Philosophy or other non-core classes or shall I take Chemistry, Bio, Physics, etc? Hmm… so these raise the GPA that UF is going to calculate on my application? But what happens if I turn in my application in the summer time, before I even start these classes?”

It doesn’t really matter which classes you take. Personally, I would take some general education classes, nothing to do with my major really. You’re going to have to take the gen ed’s at UF if you don’t take them at community college and since it has nothing to do with your major you might want to get them out of the way.

And be aware that when you start taking classes at the community college, you college GPA is affected. If you do poorly in your DE courses, your college GPA will always reflect that and it will follow you to your grad school applications.

For me, Dual Enrollment courses were much easier than high school courses so I don’t think you have anything to worry about.

They raise the GPA because an “A” in a DE course is counted as a 5.0, and a “B” is counted as a 4.0. So you can see how this would pad your GPA, especially because the courses are typically pretty easy. I would research my professors ahead of time on ratemyprofessors.com to make sure that your professor is a fair grader, etc.

And it doesn’t matter if you turn in your application during the summer. Your DE grades will come out in december, and UF won’t give you your decision until February. I’m pretty sure they will see your grades, and even if they don’t, I’m sure that having a DE schedule will be helpful in terms of schedule strength because you’re taking college-level coursework.

Okay thanks Sean. Any recommendations on what DE classes I should take my senior year? And also do you know of any summer programs that haven’t reached a financial deadline yet… I’m looking for a summer pre-college or pre-medicine program for high school students.
