Am I on track? Please help!!! sophomore for HYPS

In hindsight choco, please let me apologize for my tone. I realize that you’re sincerely doing what you think is best. I’m sorry.

If I may, let me offer what hopefully, will be something constructive.

Look around at the Juniors and Seniors who really inspire you or your school mates. Who has the (good) attention of the teachers and principal? Why? What makes them the top handful of Seniors or Juniors? Find out what makes them so. Pray (if you’re inclined) to not DO what they do but BECOME what they are – people of influence – either through their skills, scholarship, or generosity of spirit.

That’s what makes HS students noticed by sometimes jaded adults. It’s not a list of things but a type of person. Do you like to lead? If so, is it to make others better? The things you choose to do – would you do them if no one ever watched you or you knew you wouldn’t list it for a college to see? I’m not saying you need to hide your candle under a bowl – but it’s a check to see what type of person you truly are becoming.

Best of luck to you choco.

T26E4, that was nicely said. Thanks for putting it so well.

Some advices since you are aiming for HYPS

Keep high UWGPA: 3.95+
High SAT: 2300+
ACT: 35+
SAT II: 800’s or 750+
Take challenging courses
Secure 2 teachers (junior year) for very good recommendation letters
Start your essays early and write something unique about you
Do couple of unique ECs: As of right now your ECs are very generic

You will have less than 15% chance (very generous estimate) if you have all of the above.

However, your chance will go up dramatically if you win some national/international level recognitions.

I wouldn’t focus so much on building a resume, as building yourself into the human being you want to become. Follow your passions and do your best at all you do. Have faith in yourself and be true to yourself. There are many many MANY great schools out there (don’t get too caught up in the rankings), and I’m sure you’ll attend one of them. But you’re just a sophomore, so I would suggest you forget about collegeconfidential.com for a couple of years. Go and be the best high school student you can be.

Best advice but hard to do!
