Am I only one who despises Harvard?

I just hate Harvard for no reason. I don't know why. I rather go to 'University of Alaska' (a fictional college) than Harvard. Am I only one who just thinks Harvard is the worst school ever? I'm sorry if this causes bad reactions- I just can't help myself but feel this way.

It the same reason some people hate the Yankees, Microsoft, BMW, etc etc. Its sort of an "anti-top dog" syndrome. Quite common.

I could see hating Microsoft, but why would anyone want to hate BMW?

It's weird that a lot of people seem to hate Harvard. Its one thing to have no interest going there, but its another to profess hatred. Strange.

Haha, I've never seen the BMW one, either, Byerly.

But, if you can't identify legitimate reasons for your hatred, you should probably try to let it go. Why bother despising a school, anyway? Hatred takes too much energy. :)

Its nothing new. It started with the crusty conservative puritans who founded Yale because they hated "Godless Harvard." When Harvard wouldn't tap Cotton Mather to succeed his dotty daddy Increase Mather as President of Harvard around the turn of the (17th) century, he banded together with another group of right-wing divines from western and southern New England to start the "Colleageate Schoole" - which later became Yale.

For many years (and some might argue, still) the only raison d'etre for Yale's existence was that it was "not Harvard." Even in out own times, it often seems that Yale's real motto is "Harvard Sucks"!

from my impressions, most people i know who diss harvard would go there in a second

i agree with david

most people who hate harvard only hate it because they're not going there. they'd love it if they were.

Well..I dont hate harvard, but I really know nothing about it aside from its prestigious name..I would probably go there if I was qualified and got in, but I'm not really interested in it. Perhaps I would like it more if I knew something about it..but I never really researched it. I guess I just dont care.

Do you have some specific reason for hating harvard??

The University of Alaska is not a fictional college at all: http://www.alaska.edu/

I think they are still taking applications. I suggest you get yours in right away.

haha. i don't want to go to university of alaska. i'm saying that i will never go to harvard in this lifetime. i just don't like harvard because it's harvard. it's ugly. students get easy As. they think the world revolves around them. it's harvard. i just don't like it.

whoa whoa whoa -- people hate the Yankees because they DO suck, because the Red Sox are the best baseball team to ever grace this planet. not an "anti-top dog" syndrome, because they're not the top. hey, we won the World Series last year, not the Yanks! curse reversed!

red sox nation -- RSN.

i just don't like harvard constantly talking about how it's the oldest college in the nation. i mean, who CARES how old it is?! o.O what would being the oldest school tell potential students about it's teaching skills? and if the curriculum's as old as the school i'm OUTTA there!

It's perfectly alright (albeit a tad irrational) to hate a university. That being said, there are plenty of people who love Harvard, and plenty of other good universities out there that you could apply to.
Good luck with your other applications! ;)

It seems the only people who hate Harvard hate it because they cannot get in. It is without a doubt the greatest college in the world, and I would kill to get in. However, I realize my resume is simply not good enough for admittance, and that's alright with me. I would never be bitter because there are so many great schools (BC for me!) out there other than the Ivies that I don't have tunnel vision. It is all about the right fit-Harvard is probably the greatest academic school, but I am not sure the atmosphere is suited for me personally. It is steeped in tradition and pomp, which isn't overtly appealing to me. I am going to apply RD as a "what the hell" school and probably will be rejected, but even if I got in, I have my doubts on whether I would choose it over BC.

In closing, the college process transcends prestige-it's all about the right fit. I just find it admonishable for people to criticize a school purely on the grounds that they wouldn't gain admission.

Am I the only one who despises "harrypotter?"

tupac, why do you hate me? :(

"It the same reason some people hate the Yankees, Microsoft, BMW, etc etc."

That's hardly the case. Is Harvard's education as poor as Microsoft's OS?

If so, I think you have a problem, Byerly.

Wow, you must really hate Wiliam and Mary too, because they are constantly talking about how they are the second-oldest college in the nation.

"i just don't like harvard constantly talking about how it's the oldest college in the nation. i mean, who CARES how old it is?! "

I'm not sure what you mean. Every college brags about how old it is, if it's old.

Hell, many things brag about how old they are. You often see, on certain products, an "Est. (enter old year here)."

Age matters because if something sucked, it would not have lasted long. Harvard brags about its age because there can only be one "oldest college in America," and if there can only be one, why not brag about it?

Very well put saxfreq1128! That was one of the most eloquent responses on this entire thread!!
