Age matters because if something sucked, it would not have lasted long. Harvard brags about its age because there can only be one "oldest college in America," and if there can only be one, why not brag about it?

The name certainly doesn't "suck," you're right. That's the Harvard brand for you.

To answer your question, I'm sure there are plenty of people who despise Harvard for no reason; I'm just not sure you'll find very many of them surfing the "IwanttogotoHarvard" forum :) Best of luck to you in applying to the schools you are interested in.

My guess is that you hate Harvard for much the same reasons my kids hate Harry Potter. They know absolutely nothing about Harry Potter - they haven't read any of the books or watched any of the movies - but they just got turned off by all the hype around it. As a result of their boycott, I know nothing about Harry Potter either, but given how popular it is, I suspect they're missing out on something. The good news is that, just as there are many other good colleges for you to apply to, there are many other good books and movies for my kids to read and watch. ;)

I agree with cosar on this one: the amount of hype surrounding Harvard turns some people off.

On top of that, Harvard's pop culture reputation makes it seem like a place for snooty snobs with old money. True, there are rich snobs there, but I would say that Princeton better fits that profile.

I love Harvard, even though I'm a future Yalie (class 2010!).

I know this might sound weird for a Yalie, or even like "betrayal" gasp, but I just think it's another awesome school to study at.

I hope that by going to Yale, I'm not expected to hate Harvard. Sure, I will gladly take part in the age old rivalry during The Game, but I don't want to sit around discussing why "Harvard sucks," because that's just a waste of time.

I've heard the same sort thing of happens between Berkeley and Stanford: Berkeley kids are bitter about being rejected from Stanford, and if you're not bitter, you're "inducted"; it's now your burden to carry this hate for Stanford.

I just don't think that's cool...so I hope that's not true at Yale either...

UM UM UM UM UM....I am sorry you are mistaken my friend. The Yankees are the best EVER. Can any other team top well over 20 World Series championships.....I certainly think not. (you can tell I am a native New Yorker). While yes Boston, Cambridge and Harvard are awesome...you better recognize the best city in the world...NEWWW YORKKKK!!

Oh sure...the red sox won the series before.....gotta win some time this century, eh? :)

Ok I also happen to love BMWs and Infinitis, and microsoft...AND Harvard :)

Hhaha...Byerly I can tell that you are a leftist liberal :) Are ya?
Its just weird because here in florida every one is very VERY conservative. I lean more towards liberal but also have some conservative beliefs.

sr662 there are plenty obnoxious and pretentious students at harvard. I imagine there are in most of the elite schools in the country. However, my sister and her friends at Harvard all seem humble and funloving to me. It's silly to make sweeping statements about Harvard students like that. It's only OK when we're talking about Princeton and Yale students. :p

"I don't despise Harvard. I only despise the obnoxious, pretentious students at Harvard."

Students like that are everywhere; not only here. And I've only come across a few snobby people. That's a part of the reputation that isn't necessarily true.
