Am I screwed

Hey D:

I'm a rising Junior who has been taking honors her entire life. I have something hundred hours of community service.

However. D:

I have a GPA of around 3.2

I'd like to blame my family for wreaking havok and all that crap, but in the end I messed my self up, eh?

My SAT at the moment is only around 2000.

Am I screwed? xD I know people with 2200 on the SAT that haven't gotten into UW. D:

I plan on taking the following SATIIs:
- Chemistry
- Math Level 2

So the final question is...am I screwed? :x

No, of course not. You still have a chance of getting in, but as you know UW is getting more and more competitive so it will be a bit of an uphill battle. Keep your grades up, do well in your classes and on your tests, and address the factors that influenced your grade trend with a powerful personal statement. You still have a chance of getting in. You just need to work extra hard in some areas. You may also want to show some diversity in your EC and show which ones you're most passionate about.

I just talked to guy with a 3.3 and he got in. But he had ALOT of Ecs and ok Sats like 1750, but he's Native American.

are you in state or out of state that is very important.

Thank you for the replies ><;

I am in state.

ECs (I'm not sure what even counts. I should probably look into this >>):

Math Team (9th, 11th)

Won Community Service Award at school in 2004

200+ hours of community service

I have a lot of constant hobbies I've maintained for 5-7 years but I don't know if they count as an EC.

Thank you so much for your replies, again.

I think it's hard to tell, honestly. My stats really were not impressive at all and I didn't have too many actual ECs either and yet I was still accepted. My GPA was higher than yours (3.67 with AA degree from Running Start), but I had a 1770 SAT. For my ECs, I put 4 years tennis, 100+ volunteer hours, Running Start, reading, and writing. The last three, obviously, aren't really the typical ECs that people list, but just hobbies and things that I'm passionate about. I think as long as you show that you're really passionate about whatever you put, then you're good. And a really strong, unique essay is important too.

So, all in all, I wouldn't say that you're too screwed. (:

Are you in state or OOS? Since you're only a rising junior, you have at least a whole year to show a strong upward trend in GPA. Take the SAT again, and also take the ACT. Apply as early in the year as possible, and I'm willing to bet you'll be fine!

"I just talked to guy with a 3.3 and he got in. But he had ALOT of Ecs and ok Sats like 1750, but he's Native American."

Yeah well Native Americans have better admission advantages than blacks and hispanics so...yeah.

How does being in state or out of state weigh on the decision?

I think you’ll be fine. My friends sister-in-law had a GPA of 2.9 and she got accepted into UW as the graduating class of 2011. Despite her low GPA she had exceptional EC’s! She was very involved with our school and I read her essays and they elaborated how her EC’s contributed to her high school career and so forth. I just graduated 2weeks ago (WOO CLASS OF 2009;) and I’ll be attending UW this August (haha i’m doing the early fall start cause I wanna take this Flight and SPACE Exploration class they have) after finally deciding to go there amongst the other schools I got accepted to. Although, I do have a much higher GPA than you, your SAT scores are higher than mine but I only took it once and took the ACT’s aswell and did fairly well on it. When the time comes to apply just write the best essays you’ve ever written in your life!

But yeah I think your fine. Just do well this Junior year and remember what the seniors say “jr. years the most important year” and for the most part that is true. So do your best and get solid grades this upcoming school year! And enjoy your summer don’t let this issue freak you out too much.

To Fallinoctober - yes, being in state does weigh on the decision because UW is a state public school and are required to take in more of its residents. Like when I applied to UNC - CHapel Hill, they literally say it on their site that being out of state is a disadvantage because of state laws requiring them to take in more in state students.
