So I just went to a certain college's admission website to register for a campus tour later this month. Beside the information for tours on the webpage, the college had a photo of students who were taking a tour, and all of them were wearing suits/dresses. Before now, I'd never had the expectation that one was supposed to wear business attire to a tour.. all the other colleges I'm taking tours at seem relatively informal, however, they're much less selective than the particular college that had the students dressed up like they were headed to a funeral.

So my question is, did you dress up super nicely for your college tours? Should the way I dress depend on the selectivity/prestige/general feeling of the school?

How you should dress depends a little bit on what your agenda is for the day. Specifically, will you be having an on-campus admissions interview that day, or are you just doing a campus tour, and maybe an information session with someone from the admissions staff?

Even if you’re having an on-campus interview, you don’t have to dress like a lawyer. Avoid jeans and sneakers. Appear neat and washed. Young men could wear a necktie, but would probably be fine wearing khaki pants with a belt, a collared shirt, and non-athletic casual shoes. Young women could get away with non-denim pants and a sweater or top to go with them.

If you’re not having an interview, then casual dress is fine.

If you are touring and interviewing at small to medium sized schools in the South or conservative/religious schools anywhere, you will probably want to dress up a bit more. D is a tour guide and says girls visiting her campus often wear dresses or skirts & nice tops, while guys wear khakis, button-downs, and sometimes a navy blazer. (D is expected to dress accordingly to give tours.)

Wear whatever the hell you want. It doesn’t matter at all. I go to a preppy southern school, and people on college tours wear normal casual clothes.
