How should one dress for college visits?

I'm a rising senior about to leave for a trip to visit a number of the Ivies and highly selective LACs. Is casual attire all right? Are jeans and sneakers, miniskirts and flip-flops, shorts, t-shirts, etc. all right, or are we expected to make a good impression by dressing up a bit? I'm just starting to pack and any tips would be helpful.

They expect a suit and tie for boys and a dress or suit for girls

some nerdy glasses will help too

I'm not interviewing. I'm just taking tours and going to info sessions.

Depends on which college and what they say. Check with the website or call the admissions office. Most people I see on college tours just wear business casual such as khakis and dress shirts or even casual like jeans and a nice dress shirt. Girls usually wear skirts (appropriate level) or a nice dress or even jeans are fine depending on the college and situation.

It really doesn't matter since tour guides are usually students themselves and they don't mark in their little book who wears what. As long as you aren't totally a mess you'll be fine.

The websites say nothing about how to dress.

i know, i'm j/k .....they don't care. They will not remember you. It's your stats that will get you into those elite schools

Wear whatever casual you feel like then. Again, just don't be a mess and you'll be okay. For girls it helps if you look good so if you have questions or anything then fellow male students will be more likely to help :)

PS: Nothing slutty though.

Dang, nothing slutty? I guess I should unpack my knee high boots and fishnets.

slutty would actually be a plus. you may attract some hot guys. Honestly, they won't remember you unless you give them your name and a picture and say remember me with the slutty outfit

Well, actually, I broke my leg and am using crutches, so they may very well notice and remember me. That's why I'm so concerned.

i still doubt they will remember, but if it bothers you, then where something you would normally where to church or something

Most students don't "dress up" for college tours. Basically you can dress how you would dress for school, casually (whatever you would wear hanging out with friends, at the mall, etc). It is not unusual to wear jeans, flip flops t-shirts, etc. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes because there is a lot of walking.

Operate from the premise that "bathing is good": no b.o., comb your hair, clean clothes, make sure that you are not wearing clothes where all of you is hanging out so you are not remembered in a negative sense.

Since you will be doing the tour on cruthches, find out in advance if you are going to have to maneuver a lot of hills/ and steps on your tour and consider whether or not you will need assistance to get you around. have fun!!

When I did this last year most girls were in casual skirts or khakis (capris) but a few (very few) had jeans.

I just wore shorts and T-shirt on my Brown tour....

But I had a private tour with one of my Dad's friends on campus.

For the rest, just shorts/T-Shirts. It really doesn't matter.

Yeah same here, for the few tours I actually went on I went in cargo shorts and t-shirts, nothing excessive, and generally from what I saw just kids wearing comfortable clothing.

I always pack my birthday suit.

Thanks to all. I really did not think people dressed up, but I wanted to be sure. So I'll be packing jean skirts, capris, sneakers, cute flats and sandals for my tours of HYPM, Vassar and Wellesley. Any objections?
