AMC and AIME

Hi!

I just read something about how top math/science schools are starting to ask for AMC12 test results. For a student who does well enough on the AMC12 to qualify for the AIME or better, how do these scores affect admission to top math/science schools like MIT, Caltech, etc.?

I guess another way to word it would be, do high scores on the AMC12 have similar "weight" to SAT or SATII tests during admission?

Also, if any of you did this well on the AMC12, AIME, etc., what kind of schools did you apply or get accepted to? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Qualifying for the AIME is nice but your score is more important i.e you would have a distinctly bigger boost if you scored a ~10+ (you would most likely qualify for the USA(J)MO with such a score too) as opposed to scoring 0-3.

I read something on the AOPS forum awhile back which was a quote from MIT and said something like around ~20% of AIME qualifiers get accepted, ~50% of USAMO qualifiers are accepted, ~80% of MOP qualifiers are accepted and virtually all IMO participants are accepted.

So statistically, qualifying for the AIME gives you a better chance but you still need the whole package: top grades, test scores, impressive ECs, recs, essays, etc to get accepted.

I scored I think a 94 on the AMC 12 in 11th grade and qualified for the AIME (did not end up taking it) and I got into Cornell (college of engineering), carnegie mellon, rensselaer polyechnic institute and columbia

Thanks! I appreciate the information. 20% doesnt seem like very much, but, now that I think about it, that’s around twice the normal admission rate, right? I’d say that’s pretty cool. Thanks, again, for the help.

If anyone else has any other useful/interesting information, please let me know!

Will I be able to submit an update to college apps if I qualified for AIME this year (I’m currently a senior)?

AIME qualification helps, but note that several thousand qualify to AIME each year, as opposed to around 270 for the USAMO. I qualified to USAMO once and made it to MIT (waitlisted → rejected from Caltech).

Keep in mind that even a decent score on AMC12 probably helps your application more than an 800 on SAT Math II, since there is quite a gap in difficulty level. Particularly the last five or so AMC12 problems.

AIME twice but no USAMO (“bad” AIME scores)

Cal Tech: Did not apply
MIT: EA deferred, WL then rejected
SAT Math II: 800 (Aren’t you supposed to get 800 if you are applying to top colleges?)
Attending UChicago

^ Yeah, something looks wrong if an applicant makes USAMO or IMO but fails to get 800 on Math II.

Also, I made USAMO once, in 10th grade (scored 13/42). The next year (2011), the AIME I was extremely difficult compared to previous years, plus I was sick that day :frowning: Then in 2012 I scored better, but barely missed the USAMO cutoff. Oh well…

@20more
ugh, I scored a 790 in Math II… should I retake?

Also, what did it take for you guys to do so well on the AMC, AIME, USAMO, etc.? Did you prepare? If so, what did you study (prep books?) and for how long? I think I take the AMC12 in February.

I too would like to know what it takes to prepare for the AMC12 and AIME
