AMC scores?

i agree. your scores are pretty good, but there are people scoring way higher that will probably apply to the same schools as you. (i.e MIT)

So saying I got a 105 is worse than making it look like I didn't take it at all? That sucks... I wish I'd tried harder now.

I got a 105 on the AMC 12 and I am putting that down. I got a 5 on the AIME too.

is 129 (AMC12) or 9(AIME) worth mentioning?

What about 9(USAMO)?

why would you even ask that

well I guess 129 AMC and 9 AIME are good scores, but I'm not sure if 9(out of 42) on USAMO is a good score.

"If they hadn't changed the blank ones from 2.5 to 1.5 I would have qualified. Gah! "

Dude, same issue here.

OKAY. Screw everyone who says not to put it down. PUT! IT! DOWN!!!!!! Because the fact that you took it needs to be shown. These guys are freaking you out with the whole "dont do it unless its over 120." Remember, everything in your application has an effect. EVERYTHING. And an AMC score of 100 is not bad at all...

To quote a math professor who is extremely knowledgeable about middle/high school math culture, “I’ll be more impressed with a 4 in AIME than a 800 in SAT I math.”

I also believe that a 100 in AMC12 is already a fair tie-breaker among the students with 700+ in SAT I math, because I’ve seen plenty of 700+ who could not qualify for AIME.

Notice that no college application form asks for USAMO score – because no college can take it for granted that a student otherwise qualified for admission can qualify for USAMO for sure.

Hmm, yea same question as dong_xie. Should I mention I got an 8 on the USAMO or just say I'm a USAMO qualifier (for MIT that is)?

The AMC, AIME and USAMO test mathematical ability and complete understanding on a large scale, which is different than the SAT where you can just study the same old problems over and over. Thus they are more valuable than SAT grades (assuming you do well of course).

On the vast majority of applications, I would only put which test you qualified for. So for example, putting "AIME Qualifier" or "USAMO Qualifier" under awards might be helpful.

I would only put the actual score down on an application that asks for it.

I got an 80-something on AMC 12 as a sophomore with about 10 hours of studying and I'm Asian...Does this make me retarded or just mathematically inept (or both :()? I feel like I should have done better given that I've always been somewhat confident about my mathematical ability.

^^^

You are only a sophomore. This is nothing to stress out about. It is easy to improve from year to year, and that score is not that bad.

Err, you only studied for 10 hours. You can't learn geometry, number theory, combinatorics, polynomials, functions, etc in 10 hours. People who do well in AMC/AIME/USAMO spend at least many hours a week doing math problems. If you want to score well, find past AMC 12 problems and start working on them.

To qualify for the AIME is actually not that hard, you just have to go in with a rough gameplan of how many you want/need to answer, and don't make any guesses after you complete that number if you don't want to take the risk, instead double and triple checking your work. It's much harder to qualify for the USAMO, I got a 6 twice on the AIME and I've heard of people getting 8's and not getting in.

Coincidentally, I also completely forgot to mention the AMC and AIME exams on my applications and got yelled at by my parents. Turned out not to matter though.

People with a "gameplan" of how to pass AMC are normally those who pass only once or twice. Last year, our school had 31 qualifiers, half of whom just answered 11 questions on the AMC 12 and left the rest blank. This year the scoring changed and 14 questions were necessary for AIME. Consequently, only 15ish people passed AMC. So if you really want to impress admission officers, actually learn the math and pass with a high score.

Lol, I got a 2 on the AIME. I need to practice for such important things more often

about the math sat/sat2 and amc: do they have a clear correlation?

i got a 680 on the math sat and sat2 but i was an aime qualifier (only one in my school)...

i only took the sat once ("sort of" unprepared) and i had never seen an amc exam prior to having taken it this year

Unless you qualify for AIME/USAMO, it's not really worth putting your AMC score down...

If you were the school high scorer or runner-up, should you put that down even if your actual AMC 12 score was...well...quite low?
