If I'm reading correctly. You can do the 2 yr program at AMDA then transfer your credits to the 3yr MFA program at new school? Right or Wrong?

Edit: Nevermind :)

Could someone give me some information/opinion on the program at AMDA? My daughter has applied to several schools BFA MT programs and someone asked me about AMDA and I didn't know anything about it.

My guess is that you can transfer the credits to a BFA program at the New School? In order to receive a MFA you first have to have received an undergraduate degree... either a BA, BFA, or BS. AMDA is a two-year degree program so they do not offer a bachelor's degree.

If you use the search function at the top of the main MT page, you can find pevious discussions of AMDA. Click on the Search This Forum button, and type in your search term: AMDA. You will find quite a bit more about the program.

The arrangement that AMDA has with The New School is an agreement that New will accept the AMDA credits for its two year program and apply them towards a degree. Not all colleges will accept AMDA credits. After completion of four semesters at AMDA, the student must apply and then when accepted will meet with an advisor to develop an individual education plan for their courses. My understanding is that it will be basically academic credits for those two years. I inquired for a friend of one of my Ds last year as to how many AMDA students had actually done this, and was not given a clear or definitive reply, so that lead me to believe that it's a rarity. The agreement allows for both a BFA or a BA, depending on which program the student has completed at AMDA.

It seems like the only way to clear up the confusion here is to contact The New School directly and ask what the procedure is for transfering credits. However, my guess is that because AMDA does not offer any strictly "academic" classes -- i.e. English, math, languages, etc., -- that 2 years of classes at AMDA will not translate to 2 years worth of credits at the New School.

On both websites it says that the two years of credits you take at AMDA WILL be transferable to the New School. You take all of your academic courses your next two years if you go through the agreement at New School. It's probably why not many people actually go through with it, most went to AMDA so they didn't have to take academic classes.

If you're in the Studio (Acting) track and you transfer you can earn a BA degree from the New School. The Integrated (MT) track gets you a BFA.
