New School (Lang) Theater BA

Can anyone provide any info/insight about this program? One thing the website doesn't discuss at all is performance opportunities, which is odd. (But then, the website doesn't provide a lot of info overall!) Particularly interested in whether the BFA program students get most of the performance opportunities.

Thanks!

I also looked at their website and found I was confused by what portfolios 1 etc were about as they aren’t explained in course descriptions. From what I could see there weren’t classes in voice/dance. The description of the classes were very wordy (theoretical and analytical) I gathered it was a more unstructured program.

Remember - the BFA program is about 2 weeks old. This is the first class, so for sure, they did not get a whole lot of stage time cause they did not exist!!!

Photomom - Do you know if the BA program is also new?

OTM, the BA program is not. The New School has had a very old and established (and well regarded) MFA program at The New School for Drama. The BA program has also been at the school a long time.

This is a link to the program, but I am not sure if CC will let it post:

It is my understanding that the BFA you can only obtain if you transfer from AMDA’s 2 year program. It is not offered just through the New School. Also, I read that CAP21 also has a credit transfer program with The New School but you can only obtain a BA/BS with that transfer.

The New School seems to have a Drama program. Not a MT program, yet again the web site is hard to understand.

NervousMom, you have incorrect information. You can ONLY get a BFA in Theatre from The New School if you audition and are accepted into their Drama BFA program. AMDA has a special program with TNS that allows those who complete the integrated program to complete their BFA in Musical Theatre at The New School.

Other studios, such as CAP21, have a program which allows their graduates to get a BA or BS through The New School after completing their progams.

Photomom5 thank you, but I didn’t think my info was wrongly stated. From your link here is what the site says. Apples to Apples, AMDA program only qualifies you at New School for a BFA, audition or not. But if you read the note below you are invited to finish. I do not see any mention of Audition into the program on their web site, nor when I called on the phone did they say anything about auditioning. Have you pursued this avenue, and can you give more feed back.

Note: The BFA in Musical Theatre program is only for graduates of the AMDA integrated program. Graduates of the AMDA studio program are also invited to finish their bachelor’s degrees at The New School for Public Engagement in the Liberal Arts BA/BS program.

The BFA in Drama (not MT) was new last year.

NervousMom, PhotoMom’s son is IN the new BFA program at TNS. If I remember correctly, he auditioned at Unifieds. It’s a very interesting program and well worth checking out!

My memory isn’t 100% accurate, but I think last year they held auditions at Unifieds along with taking video auditions (via “Acceptd” as indicated on the link above). This is the BFA in Theater and Dramatic Arts through the New School for Drama, not the Lang BA. It IS confusing! :)

Thank you Times3…there is a difference in the BA or BFA from the Lang program versus the BFA from the Drama school. The kids who finish their program after finishing at AMDA or CAP21 or the other schools cannot take the courses in The Drama School, they are fulfilling the general education requirements at this point. It is really a completely different program than the by audition BFA in Theatre Arts. I think the collaboration is a great joint program and a different path but a good one.

My son did audition at Unifieds in NYC. It was a walk in and he ended up falling in love with the program.
