America Reads Work-Study

Does anyone have experience with the America Reads work-study program? What were the hours like? Was it a rewarding experience, both emotionally and financially? Thanks for your help!

I did America Reads last year and it was really great! Basically you give them your schedule and they work hours around it. First semester I had classes til 1 MWF so I just worked after class. Spring Semester I had classes at 12:30pm TTHUR, so I worked before then. They are really laidback about prior scheduling conflicts if you need to miss a day or two (or several like me ha) of work. For me, I worked at an elementary school during the fall where most of the kids (I think around 80%) had free lunches, if that gives you any indication and didn't have very many programs to help assist the struggling students so that was really a privilege to work with them (mostly 2nd graders). Second semester though I was stuck in a daycare working the mornings so all the kids were basically 3 or 4-- basically it was just sitting and reading to them and coloring. To be honest, working with the younger kids is a HUGE pain when trying to do more educational activities! They just want to play!

I think I worked around 6-8 hours a week last year, plus 1 hour planning time and 1 hour weekly meetings. The pay is great! I definitely recommend it for work-study.

would u recommend it to those that dont have a car? how close will they place u to UNC?

Most of the tutors don't have a car. I don't have a car. There is pretty much a huge carpooling system. For first semester, I tutored 15-20 minutes away from CH in Hillsborough while 2nd semester I tutored at a daycare right off Franklin.
