american chemical society membership - honor or solicitation?

i got a letter from acs saying they had nominated me for membership. what exactly does this mean? they ask you to check off whether you're an undergrad student, grad student, or regular member, but i'm not even in college yet... i'm a senior in highschool. is it an honor, or do they just want me to pay the $23 undergrad membership fee? thanks!

This is a solicitation. While the ACS tries to have members recruit additional members, anyone can apply.

My daughter (college junior) joined a professional society related to her major. It does advertise internships and has given her some new ideas about what people in her major do for work.

So is a legitimate organization or what? Should we join? Dd is a freshman in college with the same solicitation.

The American Chemical Society is probably the largest professional society for chemists and chemical engineers. I used to work as a chemist and joined over 20 years ago and still am a member. They are trying to bring in new student members. For example at the most recent local meeting - it was our 150th anniversary - there were many students in attendance from nearby colleges along with their faculty member. The local sections offer some excellent lectures and a chemistry olympiad and there is also a national meeting with lots of talks in many areas of research. So take a look on the website of the local section and see if any of their programs interest you. It is a good way to meet people in your area and possibly get internships at companies or even jobs after you graduate. I would consider joining if you want to learn more about chemistry that just in the classroom.

Chemusic thanks for the information. I will let dd know and pass the information on to her to join.

definitely legit. colleges often have student affiliates organizations too on campus…Son heavily involved at his college since freshman year…they do demos for the public at science museums, on campus, plan olympiads etc.
