American cuture: Sex, Drug, and Violence

Im a foreigner and I like to observe and study American culture. I want to start a topic and get some comments from people here. What do you think about the above statement. I've heard friends saying that America is not going to collapse because of anything but its self-destruction of drug addiction . Thanks in advance for your comments. BTW, my English is unamerica. Enjoy :)))

I get that impression too, although I am just an observing outsider who will be going to the States for the first time in late August. Drug and sex is a problem here too although not violence for youth, but I personally haven't known a drug addict or a non-virgin in my school even oO. I think about 30% of the youths these days though have sex with multiple partners at the same time and around 40% have no love involved in their sex and I think around 70% lose it before they're married... and 88% of that would be guys :D. Drugs... few girls do drugs but a lot of spoiled rich guys do them.

umm... yes for sex, no for drugs and violence. I go to an urbanizing school that thinks it's street... but is definatley not.

many kids here have sex probably regularly, maybe 20% of kids here do drugs. there are only a couple of fights here, but more kids talk about fighting. one of our school rivals, though, is a school full of idiots, and they're violent. they shot at our fans during homecoming!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are these sex maniacs all hawt... or does it include hawt as well as totally not hawt dudes and gals? I get the impression at least for girls that only those with a nice figure and sexy outfit indulge in a lot of sex. Perhaps it's because of movies >> Do you have the weight (fat), height (too short), problems such as bad skin or a female moustache affecting the ability to get a girlfriend/boyfriend issue like I'd expect at most places? i'd like opinion from as many people as possible. Also, do you see a lot of foreigners hooking up with Americans or something? I, for example, know a white guy who is dying for an Asian girlfriend.

You see, no wonder the world hates America.

America is not full of "sex, drugs, and violence" everywhere you go. Sure, you'll see it, but that doesn't make it the only thing America has. You've been watching too many movies.

The problem is that foreigners often base these presumptions on what they've read, heard, or seen. Rarely are these actually observed when foreigners actually visit America. Books, media, and movies usually tend to focus on inner city or urban areas, on gang violence, etc. or on adolescent problems. You have to understand that this is only a small wedge of American society. In nearly every country you go to, there will be a sector just like this, usually in a major city. You aren't exposed to actual suburban and rural society...that would be quite boring

Who wants to see a movie about regular suburban kids in a normal school with normal people some of whom might drink or do drugs occasionally and have regular families?
Not me, that's for sure.

People from foriegn countries often dislike Americans based on the movies they see and what the media tells them. They don't seem to understand that any information can be twisted. Sure if a movie or book says "based on a true story" something similar might have happened, probably not as dramatized. But then they assume that such stories happen all the time, everywhere, and that is just ignorant.

Plus, I hate when British people make this huge thing about the obesity problem or whatever. If any discussion goes out of their favor they seem to simply fall back on that, saying something like "well at least I'm not fat!" Well, this might be news, but not EVERYONE in America is fat. And the British in particular shouldn't be talking. The percentage of obesity in the UK increased 3fold in the past few years, and Britain is the third most obese nation in the world, and only by a little bit.
sorry for the rant

I'd still like some elaboration on the role of sex in the life of college student and it's relation to love in the US.

Then talk to a college student. Some have it, some don't. America isn't as "weird" and "different" as many people think.

Hmm... sex, drug and violence hardly makes America weird or different... I think UK is more weird and hostile while Americans are generally open and friendly and easier to get along with. Plus it's not only America where there are cases of the three. I believe most country with a good youth population have it.... and its presence was once nil in the third world nations where people were conservative but it's rapidly changing as we're being exposed to different cultures via modern technology.

i didn't read the whole post, but the media does not reflect the ideals of the American people. America is a very, very conservative place. Even people from Western Europe are shocked at how conservative we are. The old white, Protestant ways are still the values of the majority. Why do you think we still argue about abortion, gay marriage, and stem cell research.

America is homophobic, still racist, sexist, and very xenophobic. Yes we do not like you foreigners. We are afraid you'll take our jobs, the ones we didn't want anyway, and turn us all into Communists. Drugs, sex and violence? That's made more extreme on tv. Mind you we still have a big problem with them all, but in America our actions are very different then our morals.

Oh and we voted for Bush, great example for ya.

Disclaimer: I do not share these sentiments of the America that were stated in the above post. :P

Heh, of the people I know, the Americans hate Bush more than anyone else. o.O
I guess most of the people in America and Europe i've come across with (know well too) are gay or singles who've crossed the marriage age and are into gays and lesbians and a lot of people who can't have babies because of hormone problems and many who've adopted. Most of the ones I know are living with their girlfriend, have kids but are not married to each other and most of them go 'why do you have to marry in the first place?' and a lot of atheists. Some of the women have more than one kid, each from a different father, and are not married to either and currently in a relationship with a completely different guy looking forward to marrying but not making much progress. These were 1/2 Americans and rest European.

80% of Americans have pre-marital sex, and I think a lot of it happens at college. Whether or not it's a problem is your opinion, personally I don't see anything wrong with it. It's exaggerated a lot in the media, but really I don't think it's any more prevelant in America than in other countries.

Kind of in response to the above post--i think our country is really split on all of that stuff. I don't want to give people the wrong idea and make them think all Americans are that way. About half the country is opposed to gay rights, stem cell research, abortion rights, etc. That's the conservative half. It's unfortunate but true. But there is a also a liberal side of America (yay!) that is pro gay rights, abortion rights, stem cell research, and all of that. And only 30% of Americans like Bush, 70% hate him.

wait i meant the post two above

It completely depends on where in America your talking about. Someone from NYC is probably not going to be too similar in terms of morals/values to someone from Oklahoma.

The west coast and the northeast tend to be liberal. The south and midwest tend to be conservative. And that's VERY general.
For example, NY is, excluding the city and suburbs (Rockland and Westchester), a conservative state. The city and suburbs are generally liberal. The area of liberal majority is MUCH smaller than the area of conservative majority. However, NY is considered a liberal state because the population of the liberal area is larger than the population of the conservative area. Similarly, though the area of conservative majority in the U.S. is larger than the area of liberal majority here, the liberal areas tend to be more populated than the conservative areas. They balance each other out and the US is probably somewhat close to 50/50 on both sides.

I still think Brits are the worst. Drinking is bad in my opinion but that's normal there. Well, it's religion actually... Christianity allows in (gotta drink the wine!) while Islam doesn't -- e.g. --- at times and also the drink and drive problem. And also because some people just go slutty after drinking... especially at parties... which many people would meh at but I won't.

Yeah Alamode, I know only three peeps born and raised in NYC and based on them I can see your point.

One is dating a guy years older than her. She is still doing her undergrads (very smart girl) and is into drugs and talks shamelessly about sex and scary sexual practices (food related) all the time. Has two bastards for a friend as well as a *****. The dominatrix type who explores all sorts of birth control methods but never thinks about the condom.

One always has three lovers at the same time and often wakes up feeling ugh due to late night sex with a new gf or ex-gf... ex-gfs are ex but they still do it. He often screws up their dating times and gets into trouble and has to lie to keep each of them..and he is still interested in trying to get new girls. He will marry one day. He has lost it completely at parties and woken up beside underaged girl and not sure if he did anything with her or not. He's had gfs getting pregnant before although he claims not to be the father. He shares pictures of his women's private parts on the internet.

The third one is a pedophile. She hooks up with guys younger than her and gets along with pain in the ass guys who you'd normally not confide in and then after a while they get into a thing over the guy leaking some info about her and followed by hatred. She likes younger people definitely and most of her friends have very weird friend circles. She herself is generally friendly, approachable and talkative and education-oriented.

I'm currently residing in California. My observation here is: Drug is everywhere. People've been saying that China, Venezula, Cuba, Iraq, Iran, are pumping drug into America to weaken it. Since they can not win America by arms and wars they are destroying America by "drugging" America smoothly.

Sex, drugs and violence are what makes this country great. Alcohol, sex, and violence are what this country was founded on.

LOL...the stereotypes are wrong...All countries out there have sex, drugs, and violence in their own way..EVEN Switzerland!

All stereotypes are wrong, there will always be a lot of people who break the mould.

I'm an international kid too, and I know a LOT of Americans online, and I cannot count the number of times I've defended the US from people who go "zomg sex drugs violence immorality" Europe is worse than the US anyway (worse, better, whatever, depending on your viewpoint.) It's a really widespread misconception.

Europe is really worse.
