Cafi Cohen rececommends the American School in Chicago in her book. I looked into it, and really you can't beat the price. The books are provided which are "custom published" with a paperback cover--but they are regular textbooks, not the newest, I would say, and they didn't have color photos. Anyway, we found some in a thrift store, and my daughter actually studied out of them for her American History tests, as she liked them as a supplement. The price for the package is great--and you know--it gives you what you want--a High School Diploma.
We had one friend at school who's son got about 1/2 way through and didn't finish. It seems that if you don't finish-there isn't any transferablility of courses, credits, etc. He also got frustrated because you put questions on postcards, mailed them in, and then they came back much later. That may have changed at this point, and if you can get outside help then you wouldn't need to depend on the postcard system. I would say--the HS diploma program works but you have to finish it. There seems to be little personal support, it's for the most motivated students, I would say.
After thoroughly studying that program, I looked into the college based high school programs. The one we chose, Indiana univ. HS reauired the least number of credits to graduate!! At the time the cost per credit was also the most reasonable, but they also figured that out, and have raised the prices accordingly. The pros--many people really like Indiana University in general. (I would say I was neutral in the beginning, but I was won over) There are people there---toll free who are very helpful. If you want to take other university distance ed classes, cc or High School, no problem, they will tell you ahead of time, thumbs up or not, then you just send off a sealed transcript, and they apply it to your transcript. In reverse, the high school would not accept any courses from Indiana U. not even the college courses!!!
