Hey, im a senior in HS and i was wondering how well of a major American Studies is? From what ive read, it has some economic classes as well as history classes. Im also considering Metropolitan studies, but thats only if i go to NYU. wat do u guys think?

any1? help?

American Studies as a field is defined differently at different undergrads. The requirements are also very different depending on where you go. For instance, at my undergrad, an American Studies major would have to take a few core classes and the majority of her classes in a specific sub-field such as race/ethnic studies, critical/cultural theory, etc. Very few, if any, of her courses would have to specifically be "economics" or "history". But this works differently from school to school.

As for how such a major would work for law schools, I wouldn't worry about it. American Studies is pretty standard these days, so it would sit about on par with other typical majors like Political Science or Economics. Without knowing more about Metropolitan Studies, though, I would guess that it's a less safe bet. It sounds somewhat fluffy, and law schools might take a second look at that decision.
