When I went to bulldog days for Yale they called this a joke major in the school. American studies is what i am most interested in but I dont want the law schools I apply to, to think that I went for the easiest subject. Is this major regarded the same at Stanford or is it a good major for me to take in preparation for law school?

maybe double majoring might help?

Ya, stanmaster, I have heard the exact same thing about Public Policy, which is also a major at Stanford.

I am thinking of doing a double in major in Economics and Political Science instead, which I think will be more highly regarded.

Perhaps you could do a History and Political Science double major which could substitute for the major in American Studies by choosing courses appropriately?

I'm not sure why you think Public Policy isn't a challenging major. It's defintely regarded as one of the harder non-techie majors. In my experience, American Studies doesn't have a reputation either way. And neither will affect your grad school applications in any substantive way...
