American University (DC)! Chance me?

UW GPA 3.5, ACT 28, took 6 AP classes and got 3’s and 4’s on the tests. I have a good amount of volunteer work (especially for local political campaigns). No sports but I have a moderate amount of extracurriculars and minor leadership roles. I also have a Silver and Gold award from Girl Scouts. My school doesn’t do class rank so I have no idea what that would be! I know this school is definitely a reach for me, but it’s my dream school. Does anyone know if early decision/action at AU has a higher acceptance? Thank you all!

Hi there! When I applied in the Class of 2019, I had the same ACT score as you and a similar GPA (with all honors and AP classes since freshman year). While your profile is within AU’s range, some of the main things AU looks for in its applicants are how much they are really invested in the school, and how they can be a great asset to it. For example, AU’s most famous majors are its poly-sci, IR, and business programs, which naturally a lot of applicants indicate are their intended majors. For me, my major is public health/pre-med and I reflected my passion towards it in my essay which I felt was the best reason I got in while applying regular decision. So if your major is something you truly are passionate about, reflecting that in your college essay will be a big help (especially if it’s not one of the most popular majors). Also, applying ED will be a huge help if you know that’s your dream school, as AU accepted almost 80% of its qualified ED applicants this past year. Hope this helps!
