American University Regular Decision 2023

@napafolie - Yikes. That sounds just as bad. Surely that misery has to end by 4/1?

I am so happy S19 have all his decisions by this weekend so we can get on with our lives. Upwards and onwards!

Does anyone know why Americanā€™s admissions have become more and more selective over the years? Thanks

still havenā€™t gotten anything in the mail. called AU admissions and was on hold forever so I just hung up. really frustrated with the way they are dealing with RD admissions! itā€™s the last school I hear from and I just want to commit to a school.

@iagdpg I was just pulling the numbers/data from the letter my kid received.ā€œThis year nearly 19,000 students applied for 1,760 spaces in our Class of 2023.ā€

I was waitlisted. Hereā€™s a general overview of my application:

Intended major: Computer science (really computer science/English double major with journalism as the career goal)

who am I: white girl from upper middle class coastal Connecticut.

SAT: 1550
ACT: 34 (canā€™t remember if I submitted or not)
UW GPA: 3.5 W GPA: 4.2
AP Classes: APUSH, Physics 1, Physics C, French, English Lit, Comp Sci, Calc AB, Macro (I would have taken more but you can only really do AP classes junior year at my school)

Extracurriculars: Editor of the newspaper, founder/leader of gun violence group that organized the walkout at my school, founder/president of creative writing club, member of schoolā€™s GSA, co-president of Young Democrats, member/webmaster for women in STEM club, member of coding club, member of the varsity math team, did the fall play and spring musical at my school every year, varsity soccer player, varsity fencer/captain of the fencing team, co-founder of app design club, volunteered teaching soccer to differently abled children, volunteered with a local political campaign (also kind of my townā€™s Democratic committee), ran a personal blog since the seventh grade, National Honors Society Member
(thereā€™s some other smaller stuff that I didnā€™t include in this list but put on a digital resume that I sent to them)

Essay: 8/10 (Iā€™m a writer but I didnā€™t write about anything tragic. I think thatā€™s what gets the ad coms. I also considered but didnā€™t really explain how my grades were influenced by some mental health and family stuff but ya know,)

Rec 1: 9/10 (probably. Done by my junior year Honors Intro to Comp Sci teacher who was also my fencing coach, fencing being my main sport and computer science obviously being my major. Super cool, funny, and nice guy who greatly impacted my life.)
Rec 2: 7.5/10 (again probably. Done by my freshman year English teacher who was also my newspaper advisor. She reignited my love for English and basically appointed me to my position as editor. I trust that she wrote a great rec, but Iā€™m sure colleges just saw it as a freshman teacher and thus a negative.)

Acceptances: Reed, UConn, UVM
Waitlists: Lafayette, American (obviously), NYU
Rejections: UNC Chapel Hill, UChicago, Vassar, Georgetown, Brown, Yale (donā€™t laugh at the fact I applied to Ivy Leaguesā€“I was sort of pressured into it)

Please disregard my inconsistent grammar/capitalization. I didnā€™t want to spend too much time on this, but I figured it may be helpful for someone applying next year.

@gracemcmc - You have an extraordinary resume and thereā€™s no reason why you wouldnā€™t have applied to the Ivies; I have no doubt that wherever you put your energy youā€™ll be successful - any school would be lucky to have you

@familyfromLI wow thank you so much! it means a lot to hear that

@dopefuture.Congrats on the acceptanceā€¦The acceptance rate however is not 9%. You used the total # of applicants of 19000 and the number of spots they need filled,1760.As you know they accept many more than that knowing that not everyone accepted will attend. No doubt a selective acceptance rate ā€¦but more likely we will learn that it is more like 25%ā€¦

@cravingchipotle I tried to access the portal but it says that my AU id is wrong

does anyone know how to reject the offer of admission from american? Many schools have a form you fill out on the portal, but AU doesnā€™t seem to have that.

@rblock19 you just email them

Iā€™m a comp sci major here, thats awesome that u applied to au! id say there is a high chance of getting off the waitlist becuase they are always looking to expand the program @gracemcmc

For anyone that is interested this year or next, you can get off of the waitlist. I was on the waitlist last year and I loved the school, had shown no previous demonstrated interest but decided to go visit. Iā€™m from the west coast so I came a long way. But I toured and met with an admissions counselor (without an appointment, it was sheer luck one was available) and basically said, if I get in I will go! Granted, that was dependent on federal aid. I had a lovely conversation with her and sure enough, two days later I was in. A year later and I am almost done with my freshman year at AU. The college application process is definitely funky but I think AUā€™s approach is a lot more flexible and personal than most. Good luck to everyone on the waitlist and congratulations to all of the incoming eagles! See you next year!

hey @clairemiles , Iā€™m actually planning on going to AU on Tuesday to tour the campus since I got waitlisted and really want to show interest. I canā€™t figure out a way to make an appointment with a counselor so Iā€™m emailing my regional representative and mentioning Iā€™m visiting and if i can speak to someone about my interest in the waitlist, but what was your exact wording when you walking into the admissions office when you asked to speak to someone individually? Iā€™m just afraid Iā€™ll come off awkward or they arenā€™t used to people suddenly walking in speaking to admissions and give me a weird look haha. Also, I got waitlisted for the school of international service, and im afraid it has a high retention rate among admitted students. Do you know if its difficult to get off the waitlist for such a ranked and popular program? thanks !

I just got admitted off the waitlist. They sent me an email asking me if I was still interested last night and this morning sent me an email accepting me. They only gave me till May 1st to decide. They only offered me 10k in scholarships and a 5k loan when i have a 40k need unfortunately. Still waiting on GWā€™s waitlist so I will most likely not accept this spot. I hope this helps for people waiting and someone will want it more then me

Got off the waitlist (Computer Science). 15k merit scholarship and about 23k in finaid but still too expensive for me considering the school I committed to is around 10k a year after scholarships. I think im gonna email them thanking them but I will be unable to attend. Hopefully this helps someone else!

If I accepted my spot on the waitlist, will I still get a rejection email back at all?

my son withdrew last night after some long discussions, ultimately we couldnā€™t justify the more than $120k price difference over four years between AU and an in-state school. Good luck to all, heā€™ll be back when itā€™s time for grad school.

@VaParent19 Sounds like some good parenting!

Iā€™m so confused and in pain, my AO emailed me and said it is ā€œextremely unlikelyā€ they will go to the waitlist because they met enrollment goal, yet people are getting offered waitlist positions.
