Yes, all RD applicants got that email. I think the purpose is to protect their yield and reduce their workload by lessening the number of applicants. I’m sure there are some people who applied to American that received EA acceptances or likely letters to schools they’d rather attend.
D received the same email. OOS from California.
We are OOS and son did not receive the email. We have never visited the school and he has pretty much ruled it out, so we are not upset but for those of you that got it, you should be excited!
I wouldn’t rule it out cbpmom…my daughter applied last minute and we haven’t visited either. I don’t have a lot of hope about her chances since she hasn’t demonstrated significant interest.
I did not get this e-mail. Interesting.
Try checking your junk mail.
Here’s what the email said, for anyone interested.
You’ve worked hard on your college applications and we know you’re waiting anxiously for a response.
We have received more than 16,600 applications and anticipate enrolling a class of 1,600 first-year students. The admissions committee is busy reading applications and we have been impressed with all of the achievements and accomplishments of our applicants. The incoming class will be our most academically talented class yet.
We haven’t finalized our Regular Decision mailing date, but we will notify you the week of March 9 as to our expected mailing date.
We know we’ve asked a lot of you over the last couple of months, but we have just one more favor to ask. If you have already made a commitment to another college or university, could you please let us know today? We want to consider for admission only those who remain interested in attending American University.
Have a good weekend and we will be in touch soon!
I wouldn’t worry about it if you haven’t received it. It seemed very generic and I doubt it is indicative whether or not your application is being considered over others.
to everyone who received the email, are we expected to respond? should we let them know that we are not committed anywhere else or do they only want a response if we are?
AU is my daughters first choice, she visited and toured and also met with admissions in our local area…as far as I know she did not receive this latest email…I hope it’s not a bad sign…
@kells16 . I really doubt my daughter’s application is being reviewed seriously and she got the email. She applied last minute, in a major she isn’t very interested in, hasn’t visited the school and really struggled to answer the supplemental Common App questions about why AU .
She applied because she was interested in their Consortium exchange with other area schools. He passion lies elsewhere and there is another school in DC where she hoped to be able to take classes if by some stretch she was accepted. And if she gets into one of the other schools she is waiting to hear back from, she will definitely remove her name / application at AU
Was accepted in EDI but not offered any financial aid. Very disappointed that I was committed to the school, but the feeling was not mutual. On the surface it appears that they only accepted me with the thought that they had nothing to lose. Either my parents would have to take out loans or I would have to withdraw my application. My parents are hard working middle class people. They provided the CSS financial aid package with my application so the school knew what we could afford. I am still struggling to understand how they could be so cruel. I was added to the school’s Class of 2019 Facebook group and have connected with other kids who were accepted. Now I know how “Financial Nature Selection” feels. Don’t mind telling you that it sucks big time! Maybe I’ll write a book, “The Sad Reality of Being a Normal Middle Class Kid”. I believe every kid has and deserves some level of merit. Evidently the school does not feel the same way. Has anyone else had the same experience?
My daughter did receive the email, I found out today…thanks for your reply. To the above poster, I am sorry about the lack of merit money, I know sometimes the acceptance letter can seem very bittersweet. My daughter has had the same experience with several colleges she applied to, I don’t understand it either…I have heard in the past that AU is not known for being very generous with their merit money, however that is just based on previous graduates from our highschool that have applied. I hope that you find your place where it feels right in every way. Congratulations.
@tm0634a , although it wasn’t AU , my daughter received a painful denial to her first choice EA school. It happened to be her sister’s undergrad school. She was very upset , but my husband and I feared her getting accepted with no aid ( doubt she will receive any need based aid anywhere this year ) I think it is very difficult when you see your friends and classmates celebrating their good news when you are sad and disappointed.
I know it means nothing to you now , especially when it comes from a stranger , but you will have a great time where you end up attending. Good luck
I applied to AU RD and am a second round finalist for FDDS and Global Scholars! Anyone else?
@smokedsalmon101 I’m in the second round for GS too! How did you like finding out there was another application due?
@stilchs4 ha I didn’t mind too much, it wasn’t too bad
@smokedsalmon101 kinda surprised me…we celebrated that apps we all over and then bam another one. Do you have any idea what the acceptance rate for GS is?
Based on that email, do you guys think we could see decision letter as early as tuesday the 10th depending on location?
The email said that we’d find out this week when decisions will come out, not that decisions are coming out this week. Last year, they were mailed the week after (March 17th) so I predict we will start getting the letters on March 16th this year.
Oh I see. The way they worded it in the email was odd. I didn’t know if they meant they expected to mail them the week of the 9th, if they expected to come in the mail the week of the 9th, or if they were going to tell us the actual date on the wewk of the 9th
