Americorps vs. Peace corps

Which of these organizations would you join if you had the choice and why? Assume you've just graduated college.

ahh good question, I'm wondering the pros and cons of each as well

I would join AmeriCorps... b/c I did =P

I didn't want a 27 month commitment that comes with the peace corps, and I wanted to still be in VA. And I wanted running water. I know multiple people who have recently been / are currently in the peace corps though, and they have good experiences. Also the peace corps could have an undesirable affect on the career that I would like to get into after doing volunteer work.

soccerguy,

Could you explain how joining the Peace Corps. could negatively impact your future career? I have always understood that employers generally like to see participation in such service programs...

I believe Americorps is domestic-based whereas Peace Corps is international.

I've thought about joining both, and I'm not sure I'm ready to live without a sit down, running water toilet and deal with periods without tampons. Thus, I'd probably join americorps instead.

scuba,

I think for the vast majority, that is true, and it looks good for grad school as well. As I have been applying to different things (to do after americorps) through the fall, I have seen low/entry level positions at the Defense Intelligence Agency that require you to be a certain number of years (I think it was 3 or 5) out of Peace Corps work, if you have done that. As a difficult field to break into, I didn't want to cut an entire agency out of my possibilities.
