Amount of classes

So I was considering only taking 6 classes my junior year of high school but someone told me it will lower my GPA…is this true

It depends on how your school does GPA and what classes you are taking. If you do fewer classes, but they are all of the highest rigor possible, it shouldn’t hurt your GPA. However, this is probably more of a question for your guidance councilor.

It depends. The less classes you have, the more each grade matters. I took 8 classes last semester, and ended up wit h 3 B’s and 5 A’s. My GPA was 3.8 factoring my weighted classes. However, as I only have 6 classes this semester, if I end with 3 B’s and 3 A’s, with my classes, I would get a 3.75 GPA.

Or, let’s say I got all A’s in a semester with 8 classes, I would have had a 4.18 GPA. If I took 6 classes, assuming I had all my weighted classes from previous semester, it would actually be higher, with a 4.25 GPA. However, if I were to replace less weighted class with a regular one, I would get a 4.16. Ultimately, it depends on the amount of weighted classes you take to see if you would get a positive or negative effect.

Of course, this is only relative to my school’s weighting system, which adds a .5 to honors or AP classes on a 4.0 scale. You should run some calculations using your school’s system with the classes you take next year, with projected grades, and compare them to your actual semester GPA’s this year, to see how you personally will be affected.

Ok thanks so much

You need to have English, math, science, social science, foreign language, and a personal pick, each year. If you had that, you have the basics for 4-year college.
The rest depends on what colleges you’re aiming for.
