AMS Scholar acceptance received!

My D received her acceptance packet in the mail yesterday! I let it sit as I assumed it was the catalogue that other people said they had received after their application was received. She had a hard day yesterday, her BF broke up with her so I sent it up tonight with her brother. What a surprise that it was the acceptance in February! Does anyone have any information about what this scholar program is?

congrats.
the AMS is highest honor for applicant, and it comes with need-based financial aid+$5000 research stipend. I'm so excited because I needed lots of money as an international student and received an extremely generous aid.

what other benefits do you REALLy get with the designation? what's Colgate like for you?

oops, sorry- money's a big thing. I meant in every day life at college, is there a benefit- special classes or program etc?

I know as much as the information sheet told me. It seems like each AMS scholar would have a student (also AMS scholar) mentor, a regular lecture/meeting with professors, pizza night once a month, etc. It seems like they're really investing in and taking care of AMS scholars.
Also, $5000 research stipend can't be ignored, esp for wannabe science majors like me who wish to do research as an undergrad.

can internationals be an AMS Scholar???

@ hello123
When did your daughter sent in her application?

by the Dec 31 bell

Did she received a letter telling that theyre reading her application

and how big was the package?

The AMS thing was a big envelope with a red folder type thing inside with the Colgate insignia impressed into it. Also had a nice little band holding it together saying AMS Scholar on it, so I'm guessing the folder is the same for everyone, we just get a little band =D

Sorry i hate to have to ask this, but would anyone who got AMS mind sharing thier stats??

My son got accepted this weekend as well. His SAT I was 2340, SAT II's 800,800,770. About 4.1 weighted GPA, 3.9 unweighted. Good ECs, 2 year Captain of state champion cross country team, leadership awards, etc.

So if Phil's son goes instead to Williams or Dartmouth, does Colgate transfer the award to someone who hadn't originally got it but later matriculates?

my son was accepted this weekend as well - similar stats to phil's son - 2320 for SAT I, 800, 790, 750 on SAT IIs, 4.2 unweighted, strong ECs, leadership and community awards. In answer to your question, though, as we read it, the award is given to the top 200 admitted students, not the top 200 matriculated students, so the award would not be transferrable. According to Colgate's website, RD recipients are notified by the last week of February.

i'm international and i received the award, so yeah. and if you look at the sheet of the past AMS scholars, there are quite a few AMS scholars there.

i mean quite a few "international" AMS scholars

D received her's today. She is on cloud nine. The preferential packaging of need based aid that comes with AMS is wonderful to look at on paper (all grants). It makes the school very viable (although still more expensive than her merit schools). D loved everything about Colgate's campus and kids when she visited. Congrats to the other recipients. D has a 35 ACT, #1, 4.0 uw, 4.7 weighted.

I received my letter yesterday and my stats are 99.88 weighted, 96.46 unweighted, 30ACT, Strong recs and ECs, moving essay on my struggle to overcome health issues

Congratulations to all!

So Curm, does the package take Colgate out of the unreachable reach category?

I am curious - many of you who received AMS have very impressive stats. Are you all waiting to hear from other schools or was Colgate your first choice?
