Amsterdam University College (AUC)?

Hi,
I'm a high school teen looking to MAYBE study at Amsterdam University College (honors college between University of Amsterdam and VU University). I've read the website, and looked on the internet, found out everything I can.

But I want to know from people who go there or know anybody who studies there, what they think of it, what they like/dislike, what they have told you about it.

I'd love to PM you if you go there!

Thank you!

college confidential actually attracts people interested in studying in the US only! It is meant for all but more than 98% of the users over here discuss about american colleges…so i guess you drop the idea of getting information from here…good luck with your college search

That’s ridiculous. This is the study abroad forum; that’s what it’s for and people often get answers for studying abroad in this forum. If you don’t get answers, it may be more because Amsterdam is a less popular place to study abroad or because of the specificity of the question.

In any case, I studied abroad in Amsterdam in Spring 2007. My program wasn’t officially at the University of Amsterdam, but we did have access to the facilities and I attended a few lectures there, so I can comment on that. The university setting itself is small - it’s not as large as a traditional U.S. university. Think urban university; the facilities are built right into the urban fabric of Amsterdam. The food wasn’t that great but the buildings have pretty new amenities.

But Amsterdam itself is underrated as a city. It is beautiful and easy to learn; everyone rides bicycles around the city, so it’s really easy to navigate and because it is small, you learn quickly the best places. It’s cold in the winter (and gets very windy) but not much colder than a Northeastern U.S. winter. The spring is wonderfully mild and if you can, it’d be great to be in town for Queen’s Day on April 30. Food is also fairly inexpensive and so are drinks and social events - I had a lot of fun in Amsterdam for free. And Dutch people love to travel, so it’s a hub - from Centraal Station you can get to a lot of cities across Europe, and from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport you can also fly to the further reaches that take too long by train.

I’m a US student and have already finished and sent my application to schools abroad… I’ve looked pretty much across the entire world and havenarrowed my choices down. I was looking at applying to University of Amsterdam as well as Maastricht (these don’t come out until October 1). The “honors college” you are describing, isn’t truly an honors college. Univeristy of Amsterdam doesn’t, yet, offer degrees in english. This is why they have that joint program.

Now with this aside, as previously mentioned Amsterdam is an awesome city. I agree with the poster above, it is definetly underrated.

Now with this in mind…if you are interested in going abroad for school, I strongly encourage you not to limit yourself to one city and one school. Look everywhere. Just to give you an idea of where I have applied…UK-Durham University, London School of Economics, Queen Mary and Edinburgh. Have already been accepted to Australian National University. Also applying to McGill, but this doesn’t really count IMO lol.

If you are interested more in Europe and not the UK, look into other schools in the Netherlands and Trinity College Dublin or University College Dublin. There really isn’t too much you can do anywhere else since not everywhere offers courses in english.
