Amsterdam University College?

Hi,
I'm a high school teen looking to MAYBE study at Amsterdam University College (honors college between University of Amsterdam and VU University). I've read the website, and looked on the internet, found out everything I can.

But I want to know from people who go there or know anybody who studies there, what they think of it, what they like/dislike, what they have told you about it.

I'd love to PM you if you go there!

Thank you!

numero1 - my daughter didn’t apply to AUC, but she did apply to UCU. One thing you need to check out is the dorm situation. I’m not sure but AUC might not have dorms. It is also a newer program so there may be some things that are quite different in terms of services and support.

I believe the UK version of CC -the student room (but without the spaces) with a dot co dot uk extension had a fairly long thread about both schools that might be a good source of information. Are you a US student or an Intl student?

I am a U.S. citizen with dual citizenship. I probably won’t apply from the U.S. since due to my other citizenship I have mandatory military service in that country.

numero1-I checked again and it does look like AUC does have a residental program but it still is fairly new so it may not have all the kinks worked out yet. If you are based in the US and have gone to HS here you may be in for a surprise at the sometimes lack of responsiveness that they may show in comparison. They also don’t necessarily let you know of your acceptance until after the May 1st US deadline.

I don’t mean to be too nosy but is your drive to go abroad a monetary concern, because although the cost of tuition is fairly cheap for a European (my daughter is also dual) the total cost including room and board was still pretty steep. Jacobs in comparison awarded my daughter with a really good scholarship so the cost ended up being much cheaper. Also they are very well equipped to deal with foreign students, including Americans.

I’m not sure if you are a rising SR or rising JR but if you are starting your apps and have some more specific queries I’d be happy to try to answer them the best I can.

Yes, right now everything is hypothetical. It is a monetary concern, my family isn’t the best off financially. I checked AUC website, and they said tuition and room and “approximate spending for food” would amount to 20,000 Euros a year for a Non EU student (around $25,000). My state university would cost me 21,000 dollars a year, so it’s a bit cheaper. Of course with AUC there is also the plane tickets for visiting my family every once in a while.

Realistically, as sad as it is, AUC is a very slim chance for me to go, even if I’m accepted. But right now (as a rising Jr.) I’m just researching, seeing what I like. My drive to study abroad comes from a love for the city of Amsterdam/Holland (when I visited there) and a drive for adventure.

Numero1- since you are a rising junior you still have time to plan, time to figure things out, time to see what works best for you and your family. It is always good to have options, so at this point what I can share with you about applying for schools abroad is that the Dutch schools don’t really equate a US diploma with a VWO (their secondary education exams). In order to have a chance you will need to either have 1 year College credits OR 4 AP exams. With the 4 AP exams you need to have at least 1 Science/Math, 1 Foreign Lang, and 2 Others spread across the other subjects.

Unless you are taking the IB. If so then you have an easier time having the foreign schools evaluate your credentials for admission.

So my advice is to do what you can to keep your options open by planning ahead. It is easier to be able to apply but choose not to than to really want to but be unable to due to lack of qualifications.

Hope this helps, but feel free to ask any specific questions and I can try to help you out as best I can.

Numero-1 Are you currently a senior? The reason i ask is that if you were still considering going to AUC, there might be something that could help you. I myself was looking into going to AUC and i had the same monetary concerns you had/have. Then i stumbled onto this : [AUC Scholarship Fund - Admissions - Amsterdam University College](http://www.auc.nl/admissions/object.cfm/22DFA818-1321-B0BE-A42D30FAA9F90D0F)

For you this would mean that you might be awarded a scholarship for Non-EU students: EUR 15,000 per year, which is around 19,929 dollars per year. I hope this helps! That is, if you haven’t made your decision yet.
