AMTRAK or UHAUL van to move to buffalo.

So when the time comes and i have to move to the dorms, should i rent a uhual van or take the amtrak? I live in NYC and a train ride to Buffalo costs $60 per person. A UHAUl truck to Buffalo costs $255.

I have a cousin who is also going to buffalo but he isn't willing to rent a Uhaul truck with me. he says hes not comfortable with road trips. If me him and my mom rent a uhaul truck we'll basically be saving money. since theres more than one train to take to Buffalo. and it'll eventually cost more than $255.

Well how hard is it to move all your luggage on the train? I know i'll have at least 2 luggage of stuff. Probably more.

So somehow he’s going to fit everything into a couple pieces of luggage that he can handle on a train and then get them to UB himself and move in? Clothes, bedding, computer, toiletries?

That’s what I said. But he won’t change his mind. If I do take the train I’ll have my mom to help me. But I really don’t think taking the train is a smart idea. Any have experience with this ?

How do you plan to get from the train station to Amherst. I would think by taxi, but if you’ve got enough stuff for a U-Haul trailer you better be thinking about multiple taxis.

Well Just by myself I should have at least 2-3 luggages. 1 for clothes 1 for bed linens and bathroom stuffs 1 for my computer and stuffs . It’s more like how am I going to carry 3 luggages through the train rather than I have enough to fill a u husk trailer. But I guess from the response so far I’ll be renting a u hual van. I’ll just have to convince my cousin to chip in.

Driving a Uhaul can be tricky but driving a minivan will probably be big enough. In the state of NY, an 18 year old can rent and drive a vehicle. It costs a bit more but you are only renting for a 24 hour period. You can rent a one way rental from JFK or LaGuardia and return it to the airport in Buffalo.

We moved son into UB last fall by driving him from Long Island in a 2005 Honda Pilot.

In the SUV we had 1 UB freshman and all his stuff for school (including a large dorm trunk, a TV, BIG duffel of hockey gear, a fan, clothes, bedding/towels, school supplies, laptop, toiletries, first aid stuff etc.), 2 parents, and 2 teenage brothers. Additionally, the 4 of us NOT attending UB also had 1 duffel back apiece as we stayed a few nights in the area to visit Niagara Falls.

ALL of this stuff/people fit in the car and in a soft luggage carrier on top of the Pilot so I don’t see why you think you’d need a Uhaul.

Did you know you can order stuff from Bed Bath and Beyond locally, have it shipped to a Buffalo/Amherst BBandB and pick everything up there? We didn’t have to do that but it’s something you might consider.

You also don’t need to initially take all your heavy, bulky, winter clothes. You can bring those with you when you go back after Thanksgiving break.

We don’t own a car. So the only way to drive up there is if we rent a car.

I was originially planing on doing this with my cousin so renting a uhaul van would have been ideal. Since we would have a bit of stuff between the two of us.

I already ordered my stuff from a site that Buffalo SUNY provided us with and had it shipped to my place.

Well i’ll just see what happens when the day comes. My mom right doesn’t want to drive the whole nine hours to buffalo. I have yet to get my license and everything, so i can’t drive.

My Cousin also isn’t comfortable with road trips, for some reason.

I guess i’ll just see what happens.
