Considering going here but transportation would be an issue?

Hi everyone  I applied to UB for regular decision and I am hoping to get accepted. I really love the diversity of the university in regards to it’s many offers in majors and many different kinds of people. I do live 4 hours away though and transportation would be a problem for me  my parents wouldn’t drive me(they are busy and aren’t good at directions to a place they have never been before) and I currently have no car. I would have trouble getting there and back during college breaks or just going there in general.

Am I out of luck? Should I not go here cause it is too far away for me? I am going to find a job to hopefully get a car by my second year of college. UB is one of my top choice colleges

Have you looked into buses? Are there any UB students who come from your area? If so, you might be able to arrange rides.

When I was at college (not UB), there was a lot of share ride posts at the student center, especially just before the break.

Not sure where you live, but if it’s in New York State:

There’s a bus that leaves from/returns to UB’s north campus at each break (Thanksgiving, Winter, Spring) to/from Syracuse, Binghamton, Albany, and NYC. http://student-affairs.buffalo.edu/parking/holidayexpress.php. Prices are good, considering the convenience. Lots of students use them. You’d have to figure out something else for August dropoff and May pickup.

The train also covers the Buffalo to Albany to NYC corridor. You can take campus transportation to south campus, then the metro rail to within a block or so of the train station, or get a lift from a friend from the train station. Lots of students with a car will pick up a friend at the train station (20 minutes) or airport (15 minutes) if they can - just give them ten bucks or whatever for gas.

Thanks for replying everyone! I live 45 minutes from Binghamton! I hope I could find someone to give me a ride back home during break if we were going in the same general direction. @justlistening wow I never knew there was a train there! I live in a small town so I don’t think any public transportation would drop me off in my town but the closest I could get would be Binghamton I believe

Be careful Musical - the train does not go to Binghamton. It goes to Rochester-Syracuse-Utica-Albany (basically following the Thruway), and then down to NYC and other places. The bus at break does go to Binghamton. There is also Greyhound Bus that goes from Buffalo to Binghamton. You’ll need to check out Google Maps, Amtrak, and your parents comfort levels, etc. to figure out if it’s going to work.

@JustListening‌ thank you! I was mainly going to stick with the bus and not the train to get to buffalo. If I took greyhound from Binghamton to Buffalo, would I be dropped off anywhere near UB? Thank you for all your help!!

Similar to the train stattion - a couple of blocks from the metro rail, which brings you to South Campus, and then you can take the shuttle to North Campus. For the breaks, I’d go with the break bus (see link above), if possible. It leaves right form North Campus.

Buses and ride shares. I know kids who go to UB and transportation is not an issue.

@JustListening‌ @cptofthehouse‌ thanks! I will be going alone to visit UB on accepted students day March 28th. My parents aren’t coming because they will be working so i’ll have to find my way around I guess! I think it’s sorta scary but i’ll figure it out hopefully lol
