Best Accomodations in Buffalo

I'm going to be a senior this fall and Buffalo is on the list of schools I plan to visit, to get a feel for the campus. Here's a problem : neither of my parents have a car and I live in the NYC area.

So my best bet is to go on some type of "road trip" to Buffalo with a few friends by taking the train or Greyhound bus. However, because the trip from Bronx to Buffalo is a long one indeed, I do realize that we will have to stay overnight, visit the campus, then head out to another bus/train. So I have a few questions :

What is the best place (price and service wise) in Buffalo for over night sleepers?

Is the food stores, et. al cheap in Buffalo?

and.

Cabfare? Will that be needed ?

I don't plan to visit until Fall or even Spring. But I rather get this out the way so I can start saving up money for transportation.

Thank you :)

My suggestion is to apply and go up during spring open house.

Flights to Buffalo are not expensive and may be worth it for you.
Stay across from North Campus. There is a cluster of motels there. Indigo and Marriott are more expensive but there are 4 or so more in the cluster that will be cheaper for you. There is a little shopping center for pizza and Chinese within walking distance to the hotels.

Call UB and see if there are any shuttles from the motel area to the campus.

There are many great shopping centers, etc in the area but all require transportation. See if you can link up with any students you or your friends know for help seeing the area.

My son took a cab a couple of times from his dorm to the airport. Not an issue at all.

Grocery stores. We are from LI and loved Wegmans, a huge and inexpensive grocery chain up there. It’s better than any of the chain grocery stores we have here.

Just checked.
We fly southwest, but you can fly Jet Blue form JFK to BUF. Cheapest I’ve found is $59 each way in Oct and Nov.

Thank you. So the whole trip to Buffalo was inexpensive I assume. I plan to call up UB within next week about shuttles and such.

How was the campus during the spring time? I might be more partial to go to the spring open house.

we attended accepted students day this past March and it was great weather. We flew JetBlue & stayed at Marriot with a decent price found online. We were back a few weeks ago for orientation and this time stayed at Comfort Inn which was more reasonable (119 ntg) & had a free continental breakfast. These are both directly across from the north entrance Flint Rd. The pizza place is good and abuts the Comfort Inn parking lot. There is also a Red Roof Inn. Check out all the travel sites ie. hotels.com ect for room prices.

You might find a better deal at the Ramada Inn on N Forest Road and it’s a quick walk around the corner to the Ellicott complex where UB shuttle buses stop continuously. It’s newly remodeled and has some sort of UB discount - last summer I paid $75/night and that included a nice continental breakfast (waffles, pastries, cereal, bagels, etc.). No fast food options nearby that I know of but you could always eat on campus or call for delivery.

Across Maple on Flint is Red Roof Inn, Comfort Inn, Hotel Indigo, and the Marriott. All are within walking distance of campus if you take the park & ride shuttle from the Center For Tomorrow Lot.

To the north, near the Ellicott Complex, is the Ramada - that is also within walking distance (can always take bus from Ellicott).

There’s two pizza places in that area - Zetti’s, right on Maple and Flint, which has a real thin New York style pizza, and Santora’s, on Flint and Millersport, right across from the Marriott. My preference is Santora’s…it’s a good pizza and typical of the kind you usually find in the area.

Plenty of grocery stores near - Tops and Wegmans (the big chains) are all within a mile or so down Maple. Everyone outside the area is in love with Wegmans. It is a nice store, guess I’m used to it after living here forever. Big grocery store with a cafe, etc, inside. Tops is a bit smaller but I think it’s easier to navigate.

However, they’re a bit far to walk to. Without a car, you don’t really have a way to get there. Although you could take the UB bus to South Campus and cross the street to Tops…

If you were traveling with your parents, I’d say for them to rent a car when you get here - lot easier to get around and probably wouldn’t cost much more than taking a taxi a few times.

A few of the hotels offer airport shuttles I believe, but I don’t think any have them to a train or bus station. You can take a taxi if you want. Be aware that you need to call for a taxi, we don’t have taxis like NYC does.

If you have any questions about the buses/shuttles, post them here…someone should be able to answer them. The four hotels on Flint and the Ramada are all within walking distance.
