Could one just take the AP courses but not the exams?

It depends on school policy. I think some schools don’t give you AP weighting if you don’t take the exam. Others don’t care. Check with your GC :)

Our school never does AP weighting. The exams are really expensive.

In Florida, the exams are paid for by the state. At my school, you sign a contract when you sign up for courses stating that for any and all AP courses you sign up for, you agree to take the AP Exam at the end of the year. I’m not sure what the recourse is if you don’t, but they’re really picky about it. Why? Because they’d prefer you to attempt it, and in the event that you get a 3, your teacher just scored $50 per student, and who knows what else the school gets.

Other schools allow you to take the course without forcing you to take the AP exam.

The expectation at my school is that if you take an AP class, you take the exam. Most of the AP teachers get really upset if a student decides to not take the exam, and one of them punishes students who don’t take the exam by giving them a really long, difficult assignment to do for not taking the exam. I don’t think that it should matter whether or not you decide to take it. You should be able to do what you want with your education, and if you don’t want the college credit, you shouldn’t have to try and earn it. I don’t see why anyone wouldn’t want to go for college credit, but the choice should be theirs.

What will the colleges think if I take the courses but not the exams? Will they think that I am afraid of the exams even though I have decent marks for all the AP courses?

The problem with this is that the students who never plan on taking the exam take up space and classroom availability that should be reserved for the students who do want to take the exam. I’d be pretty angry if I couldn’t get into a class that I really wanted college credit for just because it’s filled with students who don’t plan to take the exam.

I totally agree with the above poster. Our ap Chem and psych classes are almost always full and I would be mad if I didn’t get in and someome else got in that wasn’t planning on taking the exam…
