Choosing not to take AP tests?

I am a junior who is currently taking four AP classes (US History, Bio, Psych, Spanish Language); however, I will only be taking two AP tests (US and Psych). I have good grades in Bio and Spanish, but I didn't feel prepared enough to take the test and be successful on it.

I was talking to a classmate today and he said that it would look bad to colleges to take an AP class and not take the test or to not report the score. Is this true?

Yes, it would look bad. If you have a good grade in the class but don’t take the test or don’t report it, colleges view it as “He must have gotten/expected to get a 1-2, so he chose to not take it.”

Who the hell takes an Ap class only to not take the test? You’re missing the WHOLE point of the class… You prep you for the exam.

Actually, “ivers0n,” I went into the class with the intention of taking the test. Some things happened during the school year in those classes that made me realize, when it came time to sign up for the tests, that it wouldn’t be in my best interest financially to take the test. So you can stop being a ******bag now.

No need to get sensitive… Don’t you have waivers at your school?
The AP exam costs $90 at my school, I’m on waivers, so the cost of each test is $15, plus I get $10 back.

Yup, it basically shows them you didn’t take the class seriously.

No, we have to pay the full amount and then we get our money back if we get a 3 or better.

You definitely don’t have to. Colleges don’t see the AP tests unless you send them and they don’t use them for consideration into acceptances or rejections. At my school only 1/3 of the people in AP classes take the AP exam. As a senior, i’m taking 5 AP courses and I am not taking any AP exams. I got into Cornell early decision and they said it was fine that I didn’t take the test. Most often that not, you are recommend to take th course at the college level anyway. The credits aren’t usually going to offer a tuition break, and sometimes doesn’t even count for credit, just lets you place out. It is completely up to you.

At our HS, students can chose not to take the AP test. If they do so, they will then not receive a weighted grade for the class. Val/Sal is determined by academic class weighted GPA.

Yes, it does look bad to not take an AP exam if you were in that AP class.

Of course, no one is going to want to take the exam if they don’t feel like they learned enough in the class or if their grade is poor… but you really should try to take the AP exams if you can (extenuating circumstances aside… though I’m not sure what these might be).
